Somerset County Public Schools is Hiring a School Psychologist Near Westover, MD

Applications are being accepted for a full time School Psychologist. This position is for the 24-25 school year. This is a 10 month position. However, some work may be necessary in the summer months due to the caseload of students and their individual needs. Additional compensation is available for individual's with National Certification.

Summary – The School Psychologist provides psychological assessment, treatment and conclusive services as a member of the School/County Multi-disciplinary Team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Other duties may be assigned by the Special Education Supervisor. Primary duties include the following:

  • Conducts psychological assessments and analyzes the results of achievement and intelligence tests, medical histories, sociological data, and special education programs, interprets the information analyzed and its significant interrelationships for teachers, principals, administrators and parents. Communicates observations, test results, conclusions and recommendations to appropriate staff.
  • Formulates diagnosis and recommends appropriate remedial or therapeutic measures based on sound modern research and theory; conducts clinical interviews and individual and group counseling with students.
  • Prepares reports outlining problems, diagnostic evaluation and recommended remedial measures such as curricular adjustment, special learning materials, environmental improvements, class placements, behavior medication programs, or referral to outside medical and social services agencies.
  • Participates in school team conferences and Special Education Individualized Education Program meetings where appropriate.
  • Provides crisis intervention assistance to students, school staff and the school community when needed.
  • Analyzes and evaluates student problems through application of scientific body of knowledge, review of psychological test results, discussions with teachers and students parents and outside agency conference, review of medical histories, class observations and innovative procedures, determines emotional, academic, social and intellectual factors relevant to students’ problems, assists in early identification of learning problems.
  • Consults with teachers, principals and administrators concerning classroom management, student learning, behavior and emotional problems and principals of human interaction as applied to individuals and groups, parents as well as staff and the improvement of educational climate in school, home and community situations; collaborates with school staff in planning and developing programs to address or prevent behavior and instructional problems.

III. Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Must have a Master’s degree in appropriate School Psychologist program of study. Previous experience as a School Psychologist is preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Possess a State of Maryland Teaching Certificate with the School Psychologist endorsement or be eligible for designated certification.

A valid driver’s license is required.

Language Skills

Ability to communicate effectively with and to gain the confidence and cooperation of students, parents, the school staff and medical agency personnel.

Mathematical Skills

Basic arithmetic skills and familiarity with the student Math curriculum.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to administer and interpret psychological tests and formulate diagnoses.

Computer Skills

Working knowledge of all Microsoft Office software programs.

Other Skills and Abilities

 Knowledge of the school system organization and operations. Familiar with the County and the demographics of the area.

Other Qualifications

Must be able to travel to several schools within the County and out of town meetings as required.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
