Position Responsibilities Inspires and promotes computational thinking and data-first approach in teams, studios and offices. Actively leads distinct portions of a project with periodic supervision by Project Leadership and Computational Design Leadership. Exhibits initiative, process innovation, problem solving, and decision quality with a high attention to precision and accuracy at an overall project level. Provides computational design expertise and support for projects during all phases of urban design and planning, including exploration of modeling, documentation, visualization, and urban/data analytics. This includes developing strategies for these tasks, and implementing them. Introduces a data-driven approach to urban design and implementation to enhance or supplement more traditional design methodologies. Advances parametric and generative design capabilities of the practice. Works closely with Design Technology leaders to develop systematic strategies for data flow and data management throughout the various project phases. Assists teams in software interoperability workflows. Document new workflows or processes clearly for transfer of knowledge to other staff. Evaluates and proposes innovative tools and processes that improve the design workflow Maintains strong relationships within the Digital Design team, prioritizing collaboration and effective communication. Effectively communicates internally through timely and appropriate written, oral, and visual means. Communicates externally with consultants and clients when required. Creates and innovates with a strong conceptual design ability. Integrates interdisciplinary criteria to effectively move forward the design of distinct portions of projects. Actively collaborates at a project, consultant team, and client team level by critically and constructively evaluating ideas. Contributes to and actively participates within the studio and office. Demonstrates an intermediate understanding of planning/zoning codes, infrastructure systems, building typologies, sustainability metrics and smart city applications. Identifies and effectively uses appropriate tools to design and document at all project phases. Manages time and workload of own work efforts and those of others to meet project task deadlines and commitments, with occasional interaction and direction from Project Leadership or Computation Design Leadership. Guides and teaches less experienced staff. Leadership Responsibilities Inspires and leads others by example, participates in staff mentoring and training, clearly defines team member expectations and responsibilities, empowers others, and delegates where appropriate based on team members’ recognized abilities and potential. Directly supervises staff and is committed to direct reports’ professional development. Develops and engages in talent strategy to find specialists, leaders, and future professionals for the firm through resume review and interviews. In collaboration with team members, develops a clear and consistent work plan to achieve the project budget, deliverables, and schedule. Actively engages in internal and external professional development opportunities. Contributes to the implementation of sustainable strategies in all project assignments and the associated development of staff knowledge. Contributes to the development of standards, policies, and procedures. Protects SOM from financial and legal risk. Minimum Qualifications Completion of a degree in Urban Design, Urban Planning, Architecture, Mathematics, Computer Science, or other related degree. Minimum 4 years of professional experience in developing design tools, parametric models for the creation, iteration, rationalization, and documentation of building systems. Professional accreditation or licensure pursuit is preferred; LEED accreditation preferred. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated proficiency in GIS, AutoCAD, Rhino, parametric and rendering software, Adobe Suite and Google Workspace. High proficiency in Grasshopper and Dynamo. High proficiency in coding (e.g. Python, C#, JavaScript). BIM/Revit experience preferred. Demonstrated application of algorithmic thinking and ability to develop and document innovative workflows based on computational thinking. Passion in cutting edge design technology and its application to the design process. Compensation for this role is based upon experience, qualifications, location, and education and typically ranges from $80,000 - $95,000.
