Job Description - Substance Use Disorder Counselor or Co-Occurring Counselor: A Substance Use Disorder and/or a Co-Occurring Counselor is part of a multi-disciplinary treatment team that provides direct care to clients diagnosed with substance use and/or mental health disorders. Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

1. Qualifications

a. (L)CADC, LAC, LPC, LSW, LCSW, LMFT, Licensed Clinical Psychologist. (Board approved Clinical Supervision provided for CADC, LAC, LSW, CADC-Intern)

b. Ability to work independently and as part of a team

c. Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office

d. Self-motivated

e. Strong communication and record keeping skills

f. Ability to prioritize the responsibilities and duties of the position

g. Pleasant and professional demeanor

h. Willingness to accommodate scheduling adjustments and assistance at additional Solstice office locations, if necessary

i. Ability to communicate, consult and interact professionally with other members of the Solstice team, clients, referral sources, visitors, etc.

j. Display strong, active listening, problem solving, and critical thinking skills

k. Ability to complete two ‘late nights’ per week (in the facility until 8/8:30)

3. Responsibilities & Duties

A Co-Occurring Counselor is part of the multi-disciplinary treatment team and provides direct care to clients diagnosed with substance use disorders. Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

a. Maintaining a client caseload focused on clients with co-occurring needs

b. Assessing the counseling needs of clients

c. Assessing clients for primary Substance Use Treatment using standard assessment tools and NJSAMS

d. Diagnosing clients for co-occurring disorders using DSM-5

e. Determining the appropriate level of care according to ASAM patient placement criteria

f. Obtaining previous and/or new records relevant to client’s treatment

g. Collaborating with client to develop a written treatment plan that is client centered, recovery oriented, and includes goals and objectives

h. Providing the co-occurring and substance use counseling services specified in the client treatment plan

i. Reviewing clients throughout the treatment episode to determine their need for continued services, transfer to agency with different specialty, increase or decrease in level of care, or discharge/transfer

j. Reviewing and, where necessary, revising the client treatment plan to address ongoing problems

k. Developing level of care change, discharge, and relapse prevention plans with clients to ensure movement to the appropriate levels of care

l. When necessary, reporting to, and contacting, coordinating, and consulting with referral sources, (i.e., courts, schools, employers, DCPP, etc.)

m. Participating in treatment team meetings and attending supervision session

n. Providing active case consultation

o. Documenting all counseling and education services, assessments, reassessments, referrals and follow-up in the client’s clinical record, and providing appropriate signatures and dating of such entries, including those made in electronic records

p. Completing documentation appropriately and in a timely manner, in accordance with the Documentation Policy

q. Utilization of NJSAMS for client case management, IDRC reporting, new client assessments, etc.

r. Facilitating an average of 2 groups per week

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $41,600.00 - $62,400.00 per year

  • 10 hour shift
