Description

Position Summary

Organizes and processes tissue in preparation to be run by either the Histology Supervisor or the Histotechnologist. Correctly and accurately embeds biopsies, cut biopsies, and stain biopsies to be examined. Maintains and stain immunohistochemistry’s for aid in supporting the Histology Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Laboratory Scientist

  • Thoroughly compile, analyze and correlate data and tissue samples appropriately and promptly.
  • Possess gross and fine manual dexterity sufficient to handle specimens or reagents and perform diagnostic procedures such as embedding, cutting and staining biopsies samples requiring the use of small, delicate tools, equipment and instruments.
  • Appropriately perform complex testing procedures that involve the ability to measure, calculate, reason, analyze, evaluate and stain immunohistochemistry’s.
  • Possess the ability to perform skills in a timely fashion such as file blocks, print slides and cut controls.
  • Use reasonable judgment to recognize and correct performance by maintaining daily cleaning and changing of stains and reagent.
  • Effectively and efficiently operate laboratory equipment, control and adjust laboratory instruments, manipulate a computer keyboard, and calculate, record and transmit laboratory information.

Supervisory Requirements

This position has no supervisory requirements.

Educational Requirements

  • Required: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred: One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate’s degree (A.A.) or Bachelor’s degree (B.A.).

Experience

  • Three (3) to six (6) months of related experience and/or training.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Required: American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certificate.
  • Preferred: Continuing Education.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have the following general knowledge:

  • Knowledgeable in current computer applications including new computer software and computer systems, and be practiced in needed computer skills.
  • Excellent in verbal skills especially when handling situations where information is being relayed to customers, clients or employees. Masters written communication skills with accuracy and attentiveness.
  • General extensive knowledge and understanding of histology terminology and to articulate clearly within the workplace.
  • Adequate general knowledge of histology equipment and must have the ability to uphold specific maintenance requirements.
  • Professional attitudes sufficient to demonstrate honest, ethical and compassionate behavior, take responsibility for own actions and be forthright about errors or uncertainty, display flexibility, function effectively under stress, adapt to changing environments, possess ability to work with infectious biological specimens and hazardous materials, and function as an active cooperative member of the health care team.
