ASSISTANT WATER RESOURCES SPECIALIST

JOB TYPE: Full-time, Non-Exempt

PAY: $6,667.31 - $8,104.16 Monthly
Wage dependent on education and work experience.
Assistant Water Resources Specialist salary is set to increase by 10% in January 2024 and another 2.5% in 2025.

Position Summary:
Under direct supervision, performs a variety of technical and administrative programmatic support tasks for the Solano County Water Agency Lake Berryessa Mussel Prevention Program. The technical tasks include but are not limited to conducting routine biological monitoring and sampling for the early detection of aquatic invasive species, performing aquatic invasive inspections and decontamination services on various watercraft, and conducting additional biological monitoring as needed. The administrative tasks include but are not limited to weekly and quarterly report writing, acting as mentor and team lead to seasonal staff, assisting in grant and permit applications or reports, and community public outreach.

This position works primarily in the field with approximately 70% field and 30% office assignments. This position is expected to work primarily weekends throughout the year and holidays April through September.

Classification Requirements:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in biological sciences, environmental sciences, natural resources, or a related field.

License:

  • Possession of an appropriate California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Obtain a Watercraft Inspector and Decontaminator Level III Trainer Certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Obtain a Division of Boating and Waterways issued Boater License within one (1) year of employment.

Ideal Candidate will have Skills, Experience, and Abilities with:
Experience in aquatic and terrestrial (bird) biological surveys. Ability to connect with and motivate a diverse group of people. Skills to be highly organized to maintain records and various tasks. Experience with or willingness to learn the operation of small power equipment, watercraft, and towing trailers.

Current Employee Benefits:
RETIREMENT: The Agency participates in CalPERS retirement program. New CalPERS employees have a defined benefit formula of 2% at age 62 and pay a contribution rate of 50% of the normal costs (currently 7.75%). The Agency is not enrolled in Social Security.

HEALTH BENEFITS: The Agency has a cafeteria plan for medical insurance (through CalPERS). The Agency covers up to 80% of the full family Kaiser plan medical insurance costs (other health plans available). Twenty-five percent of any unutilized benefits in the cafeteria plan
are reimbursed to the employee at the end of the calendar year.

The Agency pays the full cost of the following benefits:

  • Dental and Vision Insurance for employee and dependents.
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Short- and Long-Term Disability Insurance for the employee.
  • Post-Retirement Health (provided amount dependent on vesting schedule).

LEAVE - Regular 40-hour full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rate of 120 hours per year. After three (3) years regular 40-hour full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rate of 160 hours per year. Regular 40-hour full-time employees accrue sick leave at a rate of 96 hours per year. Note: Vacation and sick hours are prorated when less than 40 hours per week are worked.

HOLIDAYS – Regular 40-hour full-time employees receive 104 hours of paid holidays per year. If an employee works less than full-time, holiday hours will be prorated based on hours worked.

OTHER BENEFITS – Employees may elect to participate in a deferred compensation plan (457b & 457b Roth) and/or a flexible spending account plan.
