Luthiers or Musical Instrument Makers or Repairers build, repair and restore musical instruments, and modify and tune them to owners' specifications.
WHAT IS A LUTHIER:
A luthier is an artisan who makes or repairs stringed instruments such as cellos, violins, guitars, mandolins, dulcimers and banjos. The word luthier comes from the French word luth, which means lute, and the art of making and repairing instruments is a centuries-old tradition.
There are two categories when it comes to making or repairing stringed instruments; instruments that are bowed, and instruments that are plucked. In most cases, a luthier will focus on making or repairing one specific instrument that they also know how to play. A musician will use the services of a luthier in order to keep his or her instrument in excellent playing condition.
Over time, an instrument changes and needs to be adjusted. Constant string tension, environmental factors, and general use all combine to push an instrument out of its ideal form. A luthier repairs stringed instruments that go through this kind of wear and tear. Luthiers also repair different kinds of physical damage, like dents or fractures, in an instrument’s body. A luthier cleans, seals, patches, and refinishes the damaged area so that it is barely noticeable. He or she then makes sure the wood is protected from further damage.
WHAT WE EXPECT:We realize that this trade is not common and honestly is rare. We are able to train and setup a new luthier for success but that person must be able to understand and retain the information that is provided as we are one of the busiest shops in South Georgia and North Florida. In our store do we not only work on instruments but we also sell instruments. Our Luthiers are expected to be able to sell and repair instruments. We expect our luthier to have reliable transportation to and from work and be on time when scheduled. Having experience in stringed instruments is a must (at least experience in guitar). Knowing understanding, building, designing and or repairing stringed instruments is what we do daily. We use hand tools, bench tools, lasers, CNC machines and basic hand tools. Knowing or learning how to safely use these tools is very important, for your safety and the instruments being worked on. We also require a high school diploma or equivalent.
HOW MUCH DO YOU MAKE?We pay our luthiers based on commission. Each repair is calculated by the hour when we bill our customers. Our luthiers will make a competitive commission on each repair. Our luthiers also make commissions on the sale of instruments, accessories and parts. When it comes to custom guitars, amps and pedals, we pay very well when a Luthier has created their own instrument, amplifier and or pedal. Basically the sky is the limit when it comes to compensation in the busiest music store and repair shop in the south.
HOW TO CONTACT US:
Since we are always busy please respond to this application via the app, website and or email. If you would like to stop by feel free but please do not call the store in regards to this job listing as we don't have the personnel to screen the phones.
