Program & Curriculum Coach

Reports to: Educational Equity Regional Manager Status: Full-Time, Exempt

At the Social Justice Learning Institute, we are dedicated to improving the education, health, and well-being of youth of color by empowering them to take hold of their educational future using research as a tool for community and social change. We train students to conduct research on problems in their community using a rigorous yearlong curriculum while providing basic academic support (i.e., tutoring, homework assistance, academic counseling, etc.) and college preparatory education. SJLI’s youth learn what it takes to achieve academically in order to go to college and become civically engaged, solution oriented and critical participants in the democratic experience. SJLI envisions an educational system where youth become engaged citizens who discover their best talents and apply them to help improve the world they live within.

Job Summary

The Program & Curriculum Coach ensures that the Urban Scholars program implementation at each site within a district is operating at fidelity. When all conditions are met, the Program & Curriculum Coach functions as a coach to the teacher of record and an intermediary between SJLI and the partnering school site. Since the Program & Curriculum Coach is frequently in the class, students will begin forming a relationship with the coach as a teacher. Programmatically, SJLI serves 25 students per school site with 1 Teacher of Record leading the class with the assistance of the Program & Curriculum Coach. This candidate must monitor the pacing of the curriculum to ensure our program moves forward for 3 sites within a given district. 

Position Summary: 

The Program & Curriculum Coach coaches the teacher of record through SJLI’s curriculum to ensure program fidelity. In addition, assisting with tracking the impact of the Urban Scholars program is a necessary component of this position as well.

Responsibilities:

In-Class Support

  • Provide in-class instruction and curriculum development support.
  • Provide direct service and program support
  • Coordinate with tutor support and academic support services including teachers
  • Evaluate the work of staff and volunteers to ensure that programs are of appropriate quality and resources are used effectively. 
  • Enforce established safety policies and protocols

Curriculum Coach

  • Managing day-to-day course related activities for Educational Equity Programs
  • Coordinate Bi-Monthly Teacher Meetings

Program Coordination

  • Plan, direct, or coordinate program activities and field trips
  • Participate, co-lead and sometimes fully lead Urban Scholars, Urban Health Fellowship, and other programmatic classes.
  • Act as a liaison between the Social Justice Learning Institute (SJLI), Urban Scholars, and partnering schools under leadership from Educational Equity Programs Regional Manager 
  • Establish and maintain relationships with partner agencies and organizations in the community and to ensure services are not duplicated.
  • Manage school and partnership sites.
  • Establish, maintain, developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with school staff and volunteers 
  • Assist with facilitating, collaborating, and partnership with the community members, public agencies, non- and for- profit organizations 
  • Identifies opportunities for new community partnerships 
  • Participate in fundraising and in-kind support 
  • Enforce established safety policies and protocols
  • Participate and sometimes lead team meetings, attend all staff meetings

Data Tracking

  • Prepare and maintain records, databases, and program reports including but not limited to budgets and training manuals. 
  • Communicating with Program Regional Manager on program needs
  • Facilitate the completion of various surveys and assessments that evaluate the program
  • Responsible for working with Academic and Career Services Coordinator to ensure all data for class and students is up to date
  • Provide monthly program updates and reports.
  • Evaluate program goals, objectives and outcomes and ensure they are being met.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Has a social justice framework and is knowledgeable of the tenets of equity.
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to the goals, guidelines, and principles the Social Justice Learning Institute
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • Possesses a valid California Driver’s License
  • Able to obtain a live scan clearance
  • Availability to occasionally work on weeknights and weekends
  • Able to form strong relationships with a wide range of constituents, including, but not limited to, parents, students, staff and leadership
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment
  • Experience in working with young people from the youth development perspective

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Masters preferred) in education, psychology, social welfare, or related field
  • 3 – 5 years of experience in a similar non-profit role
