Primary Purpose
Designs and prepares engineering plans, specifications, standards, studies, cost estimates and develops sound technical recommendations, in support of projects and tasks that may be managed by others. May provide Professional Engineer sign off and stamp approval (if individual is licensed) per discretion of management. Manages, coordinates, and directs development of work scope, selection of consultants and/or contractors, cost estimates, budget, permits, design, material procurement and schedule for projects and tasks. Manages input from and participation with various departments within the Company, as needed, to meet project objectives. Applies high level of technical expertise to solve operational problems (e.g. gas, structural, electrical, etc.) identified by the Regions or other organizations. Establishes and maintains key relationships with internal and external personnel within area of expertise to support higher level engineers in the development of company engineering policies. Selects and provides direction to contractors, consultants, Company engineers, technical specialists, and the remainder of the project team.
Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of situations or data requires evaluation of readily identifiable factors. Applies sound and independent judgment to effectively assess problems and select methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Medium level/degree of autonomy in the performance of work and decision-making; tasks are performed under general supervision of the assigned Supervisor or higher-level engineer. Provides guidance and mentorship to entry-level engineers.

This position will be a part of the hydrogen-blending group and will be supporting the Company's efforts in making hydrogen blending applicable for new and existing systems, including becoming a hydrogen subject matter expert for the Company.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Engineering and Technical Knowledge:
    • Applies a high level of technical expertise to solve operational problems identified by the Regions or other organizations.
    • Provides technical recommendations for the evaluation of, and resolution to, engineering problems and designs involving various engineering disciplines.
    • Provides technical advice to entry-level engineers.
    • May review low to moderately complex construction drawings and provides official approval stamp per discretion of management.
    • Assists with the development and update of Company engineering policies.
    • Publishes or contributes to the publishing of a technical document.
    • Shares and effectively uses trade/technical knowledge.
    • Confidently conveys thoughts, ideas, and/or solutions to peers or managers, while being respectful and mindful of other's contributions to the same discussion.
    • Influences others, typically peers or managers on issues related to large projects, to accept one's proposed idea(s), by using facts/data to support the proposed idea(s).
    • Establishes and maintains key relationships with internal and external personnel within area of expertise.
  • Engineering and Analytical Thinking:
    • Gathers, organizes, and analyzes data to draw logical conclusions.
    • Prepares, reviews, and approves engineering calculations and analyses, and provide tangible and sound recommendations.
    • Applies engineering principles to analyze and resolve problems.
  • Driving vision: Understands the company goals and company vision and uses skills and resources to steer day-to-day work and projects in the direction that leads towards successful completion of them.
  • Company, Industry & Regulatory Awareness:
    • Stays abreast of the latest changes, trends, and technological advancements in the industry.
    • Maintains familiarity with Company operations to effectively support client requests.
    • Uses knowledge of state and federal codes, industry standards and Gas Standards, Rules, and Tariffs.
    • Uses knowledge of Company operating practices, processes, policies, and procedures, to effectively support requests/assignments.
    • Understands the different organizations in engineering and operations and their distinct processes, services, and responsibilities to effectively support requests/assignments.
    • Develops and provides input on Gas Standards that govern the selection, design, application and operation of engineered components, materials, and systems, which meet Company's needs, and with optimum economic considerations.
    • Participates in meetings to review proposed changes, in regulatory requirements, affecting Gas codes and standards. -Recommends edits/modifications to Gas Standards that reflect regulatory changes or improvements.
    • Interprets state and federal codes, industry standards and Gas Standards for clients.
  • Project Management:
    • Manages and coordinates large projects and tasks, including review and development of work scope, project controls, selection of consultants and/or contractors, cost estimates, preparation of budget and project schedule, permitting, design, material procurement, and start-up, to ensure successful completion of the project or task.
    • Manages and negotiates with contractors, consultants, Company engineers, technical specialists, and the remainder of the project team.
    • Manages the activities of, and has overall responsibility for, multiple, concurrent projects and/or tasks, which require the ability to plan and manage workload so that assignments are completed on time, in proper priority and within budget.
  • Process Improvement:
    • Improves systems, programs, and operation processes, to increase productivity, data accessibility and operations, at team level.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree Engineering. Required

Experience

  • 5 years previous full-time related engineering experience and possess an EIT is required.
  • 2 years hydrogen experience. Preferred

    • Ability to understand and apply engineering/technical, mathematics and physical science principles, and the practical application thereof, to analyze and solve problems, as appropriate to area of assigned responsibility Intermediate Required

    • Ability to perform project management skills (e.g. leadership, communication, team management, scheduling, negotiation, decision-making, problem-solving, cost control, risk management, adaptability, execution) and concepts, and understands how it applies to their work Beginner Required
    • Ability to determine project and resource requirements, and assign tasks to team members Beginner Required
    • Ability to identify the potential financial impact, as well as the impact that the project or task has on existing Company facilities, programs, operating philosophies, and procedures Beginner Preferred
    • Ability to plan and manage workload so that assignments are completed on time, in proper priority and within budget Beginner Required
  • Communication Skills:
    • Ability to effectively work with various departments to maintain open lines of communication Intermediate Required
    • Ability to communicate technical and non-technical information and concepts clearly and concisely with different levels of management in both formal and informal settings Intermediate Required
    • Ability to deliver clear, organized and persuasive presentation of ideas, findings, proposed solutions, and data analyses based on audience Intermediate Required

Licenses & Certifications

  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)/Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification. Required
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the state of California. Preferred
