Smithville School District is Hiring a School Safety Officer Near Smithville, MO

Purpose Statement

The job of School Safety Officer is to provide support to instructional processes with specific responsibilities for the safety and welfare of students, staff, and visitors during classroom and non-classroom activities; monitoring and maintaining a safe and secure school site and grounds; communicating information, observations and/or incidents; assisting with emergency management and collaboration with law enforcement.

This position reports to the Director of Operations.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations.
  • Notifies the administrative staff, police, fire department, or other appropriate authorities of security or emergency situations.
  • Assists with implementing emergency response protocols to include evacuation, severe weather, hold-in place, secured perimeter, lockdown, reunification and other emergency response procedures (drills, exercises and actual events).
  • Maintains compliance with all laws and district policies related to carrying a firearm and/or other law enforcement tactical equipment or weapons.
  • Provide emergency care when necessary to include CPR, basic first aid, de-escalation strategies, and crisis care.
  • Participates and responds as a crisis team member to implement appropriate protocols and responds to incidents that could potentially compromise the safety and well-being of the school community.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and operation of security cameras for the purpose of ensuring security of students, staff and visitors.
  • Escort students, assigned staff and visitors for the purpose of ensuring safety and site security.
  • Interact consistently with students for the purpose of building relationships.
  • Monitor student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Monitor student behavior during and between assigned periods and at student events (cafeteria, restrooms, detention, home games, dances, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, regulations, secure facilities and safe environment.
  • Patrols grounds and facilities (including door checks) for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring criminal or irresponsible activities.
  • Provides traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lots.
  • Communicates incidents including personal injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, rule violations, etc. to administration for the purpose of following up in accordance with safety guidelines and policy.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of documents (incident reports, activity logs, procedures, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and conveying information.
  • Assist building administration and staff to enforce school policies, rules and regulations that strive for safety. (second set of eyes, assist at home visit, etc.)

Other Functions

  • Reads and responds to email communications.
  • Participate in meetings, training or workshops required by the District.
  • Performs other related duties for the purpose of ensuring efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Demonstrate effective human relations, communication skills, problem solving, follow up and accountability.
  • Complies with all district rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Demonstrates regular and consistent attendance.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: preparing and maintaining accurate records; operating standard office equipment; and utilizing pertinent software applications. Follow and relay verbal and written orders. Strong written and verbal communications and relational skills. Remain professional, composed, and objective in all types of situations. KNOWLEDGE is required to read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: English grammar/punctuation/ spelling/vocabulary; and telephone etiquette. ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: maintaining confidentiality; adapting to changing priorities; working with frequent interruptions; communicating with diverse groups; and displaying tact and courtesy. Observing situations analytically, impartially, and objectively to record them clearly and completely. Use sound logic and independent judgement to react quickly and appropriately in dangerous and emergent situations. Anticipate potential problems before they occur. React to situations utilizing appropriate levels of force or restraint. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, teachers, parents, students, and the general public.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization’s services

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Regularly walking, hearing and speaking, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Being able to communicate in noisy environments, have close moderate and distance vision ability, must have the ability to lift 70 lbs. to shoulder height occasionally. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 50% walking, and 40% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Employee will be required to work inside and outside, which may involve inclement weather including rain, snow and temperatures below freezing or in excess of 100 degrees. The noise level could be occasionally loud.

Experience: Job related experience is desired. Emergency response and supervision.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent and 60 College Credit Hours minimum.

Salary Grade: Classified Salary Schedule M

Certificates and Licenses:

CPR/First Aid Certification required within 30 days Class Commissioned Police Officer and/or POST Certified Police Officer

Clearances: Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance Physical Exam and Essential Functions Test

Required Training:

  • Conflict Resolution Training, Crisis Management Training, Critical Decision-Making Training, Threat Detection Training, Mandt Training
  • Must stay current on training – employee responsibility
