Smithtown Summer Camp is hiring a Camp Director for our full day camp. We have a unique and incredible location for our summer camp at the prestigious Knox School on 541 Long Beach Rd, St James, NY 11787. Founded in 1904, The Knox School is Long Island’s oldest established private school. Knox is a progressive, co-ed, independent college preparatory boarding and day school located on 40 acres of serene waterfront property along the North Shore of Long Island.

The campus features captivating outdoor spaces including an on campus pool, tennis courts, and grass fields to versatile indoor facilities including a gymnasium and classrooms. Our diverse activities encompass sports, games, swimming, playground time, arts, crafts, music, beach outings, nature exploration, and adventure.

This summer, the camp at The Knox School, will operate Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM, for all 8 weeks, starting on June 27, 2024, and concluding on August 23, 2024. Please note that for week 1, the camp will run from Thursday, June 27th, to Wednesday, July 3rd, as we will be off on July 4th and 5th in observance of the holiday.

We are seeking an experienced individual with a knack for developing and executing engaging programming, coupled with the ability to oversee day-to-day operations seamlessly. As a Camp Director, you'll be the central figure responsible for orchestrating every aspect of the camp experience at your designated Knox School location. Your role encompasses a diverse range of responsibilities, all aimed at crafting an unforgettable and enriching camp journey for our young participants.

Our Camp Directors wield genuine ownership over their programs, injecting their unique creativity and skills into crafting dynamic weekly schedules. While managing campers, liaising with families, coordinating facility logistics, supervising staff, and overseeing various camp activities, you'll receive unwavering support from the Smithtown Summer Camp Office Team every step of the way.

Pre-Camp & Throughout the Year

  • Attend and support preparations for pre-camp events such as, open house, camper orientation, parent orientation, staff training, and pre-camp staff events.
  • Anticipate approximately 10 individual and/or group interviews per month and participate in second interviews for leadership staff positions.
  • Attend one in-person (or sometimes virtual) leadership meeting per month starting in April.
  • Use the Spring to learn the basic policies and daily responsibilities of the position. (e.g., daily schedule, use of Campsite, staff policies, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Operate the camp in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Administrative and strategic planning.
  • Understand all Department of Health policies.
  • Document processes and maintain detailed records.
  • Hire, train and manage the staff.
  • Supervise the opening and closing of camp.
  • Manage the day to day operations of camp.
  • Coordinate the weekly field trip.
  • Plan the daily camp schedule and activities.
  • Provide a fun and safe camp experience.
  • Interact with families at drop off and pick up.
  • Communicate with families before, during and after the summer.
  • Engage with campers in a caring and positive manner.
  • Resolve issues that may arise with injuries, camper behavior and parent feedback.

Qualities

  • Previous camp and managerial experience is require
  • Ability to help children grow in character, experiences and insights
  • Highly organized with an eye for detail.
  • Strong desire to communicate with the staff and families.
  • Good interpersonal skills and works with integrity.
  • Ability to relate to campers of all abilities.
  • Flexibility to adjust plans in real time if necessary.
  • Prior experience working with children in a leadership position.

Salary

  • $8,000 - $9,000 per season plus potential bonus.
