The Assistant Plant Hog Procurement Business Manager is responsible for supporting the Plant Hog Procurement Business Manager with meeting plant supply needs for livestock at a competitive cost. They will also support in directing and coordinating activities of personnel engaged in the purchasing and receipt of livestock, and ensures processes are handled in an appropriate and humane manner according to company policies and USDA regulations.
The Assistant Manager will also provide guidance and leadership as needed in the field with suppliers and at conferences adding strength to the Smithfield Brand.
The position summary states the general nature and purpose of the job. Overall accountabilities are defined in this section.Core Responsibilities
  • Assists in weekly scheduling and daily deliveries of all animals into the facility.
  • Develops and maintains a strong relationship with suppliers, plant production and the USDA.
  • Monitors daily hog costs and freight.
  • Gathers and compiles information for daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly department reports.
  • In the absence of a Livestock Manager, assumes their daily responsibilities.
  • Updates and keeps current animal handling and safety training records.
  • Oversees supervisors and the daily activities of humane handling, plant production and proper weighing and identification of animals.
  • Grow the Smithfield Brand through Supplier and Allied Industry contacts and relationship management.

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in animal science, agricultural business, agricultural economics, economics, business or related field and 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
  • Experience in team management/development or project leadership is required.
  • Truckers Quality Assurance-Advisor Training, preferred.
  • Pork Quality Assurance-Certification or Advisor, preferred.
  • Prior knowledge of the pork or food industry.
  • USDA bondable.
  • Knowledge of accounting, inventory, manufacturing and ordering process.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Economic and math skills, and the ability to analyze information and data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong business and negotiating skills.
  • Independent decision making abilities.
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
  • Must be able to travel 10% or more of the time.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Provides leadership and guidance to Hog Procurement team.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
