Summary:SKF in Sumter, S.C. is a world-class manufacturing site with a new line design and installation of state-of-the-art equipment and handling systems. SKF offers solutions around the rotating shaft, including bearings, seals, lubrication management, condition monitoring and maintenance services. The SKF Sumter, SC site played an integral role in helping Mars Rover collect rock and regolith samples on the planet’s surface. The Metrologist is the first line support in addressing daily production issues related to process performance. This position is responsible for technical shop floor support. 

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Maintain 5S certification of work area and throughout the facility.
  • Lead continuous improvement green belt projects (DMAIC)
  • Troubleshooting measuring equipment and masters.
  • Troubleshooting machine, program, and tooling issues.
  • Support and participate in root cause analysis and continuous activities.
  • Develop measuring methods and processes for production and prototype parts
  • Recommend, implement, and maintain measuring equipment within the plant.
  • Complete master & gauge designs, maintenance, and optimization of them in conjunction with tooling engineer.
  • Complete and update control plans.
  • Create Routings and Bill of Materials.
  • Create Manufacturing Prints.
  • Support training and qualify new employees
  • Support Operations in meeting facility KPIs in Safety, Quality, Deliveries and Cost.
  • Support Channel Manufacturing Engineers in process documentation.
  • Participate in problem solving and/or continuous improvement activities on various plant issues as assigned.
  • Perform data entry duties for a variety of manufacturing/quality systems.
  • Support and recommends edits and updates of new and existing documents as assigned.
  • Audit operations to process standards.
  • Conduct tooling design, maintenance, and optimization.
  • Perform Advanced XA (MRP system) activities.
  • Creation and updating of documentation related to measurement systems and methods.
  • Other production support as needed, within measuring processes.

Required Skills & Education:

  • 2 years’ experience as an Engineering Tech and an Associate in Science with an emphasis in metrology, quality, or engineering. or 7 Years Experience with working and maintaining gauges.
  • Be able to lift and maneuver up to 35 lbs.
  • Experience in Advanced XA (MRP system) activities.
  • Proficient in understanding of GD&T.
  • Proficient in operating and programming CMM’s and other more automated gauge systems.
  • Proficient in CAD/CAM (Solid Works and/or AutoCAD).
  • Proficient in measuring software, Metrolog, Pcdims, Calyspo, etc.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite Software.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • 6 Sigma Green or Black Belt (preferred).
  • Critical thinking / troubleshooting skills.
  • Flexible – willingness to work off-shifts and weekends to accomplish goals.
  • Positive attitude with the ability to support the Company’s goals and mission.
  • Must use excellent ethical business practices and good judgment in dealings.
  • High safety focus with the desire to maintain a safe work environment in an industrial setting.
  • A commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to solve problems and remain open to try new ways of doing things.
  • Ability to focus on highly detailed tasks to ensure accuracy.
