SJWD Startex Jackson Water District is Hiring a Crewman Water Utility Near Spartanburg, SC

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under supervision, assists with skilled work as a member of a crew in the installation, repair, and maintenance of underground water distribution pipeline systems; and performs related work as required. Decision making is within district policy and procedures. Supervision is required. Much of the work is performed as a member of a crew, although individual assignments of a more limited nature may be performed. Individuals in this position normally advance to Equipment Operator after gaining experience and achieving proficiency which meet the requirements for that position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following with proper supervision:

1. Assists higher skilled employees in pipeline installation, maintenance, and repair.

2. Measures, cuts, and joins steel, cast iron, ductile iron, asbestos cement, copper, and plastic water pipe.

3. Taps water mains; installs copper or plastic service lines; installs industrial, commercial, or residential water meters.

4. Installs and performs minor repairs to hydrants, valves, meters, pressure regulators, and related equipment.

5. Locates valves, meters, hydrants, and related appurtenances from maps, drawings, and sketches.

6. Observes proper safety precautions; maintains tools, supplies, equipment, and the work site in a safe condition; learns to install shoring in trenches as directed; sets up and places traffic warning devices and barricades.

7. Assists in preparing the work site and in ensuring that materials and tools are available as needed; returns tools and equipment to their proper place; helps keep tools and supplies in a clean and orderly manner on the job; cleans the work area after the job is completed.

8. Performs physical labor work as required. Operates saws, compressor, spades and tampers to cut and remove pavement in preparation for pipeline installation and repair work. Uses shovel, pick, and bar to excavate; back fills holes and trenches; installs shoring and bracing in holes and trenches as required.

9. May assist in disinfecting the distribution system.

10. May perform maintenance and repair to meters and meter boxes.

11. May keep simple records of work performed.

12. May perform investigation, leak detection, pipe location, and hydrant repair, under supervision, on a training basis.

CLASSIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge: The identification and use of standard and hand power tools; South Carolina driving and safe driving practices. Training will be provided in the proper use of the equipment, materials and methods used in pipeline locating, installation, maintenance, and repair; identification, use, and operation of common hand and power tools; safety procedures pertaining to the work, including proper shoring and barricading methods; sanitation practices applied to water distribution pipelines.

Skill: Using standard locating equipment such as a pipe horn, and GPR locating sled; performing semiskilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of underground pipelines; repairing a variety of meters and gate valves using hand and power tools and equipment required for the work; reading the interpreting pipeline drawings, specifications, and survey markers.

Ability: Learn the methods, materials, hand and power tools, and equipment used in performing semiskilled work in underground water distribution pipeline locating, installation, maintenance, and repair; learn and apply safety procedures related to the work; learn to read pipeline drawings, blueprints, maps and specifications; perform simple arithmetic calculations; work cooperatively as a crew member or alone; establish and maintain effective working relationships; follow oral and simple written instructions; complete forms accurately and keep simple records; learn to disinfect and flush the distribution system.

Education and Experience: Generally, a high school diploma or its equivalent and some experience working outdoors.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations Required: None required. Initiative to work toward obtaining a CDL license and Distribution License D within one year.

Equipment, Machines & Materials: Office systems/equipment: laptops, tablets. Initiative to work toward competent operation of Heavy/specialized equipment: Backhoe, loader, boring machines.

Pay: $18.00 - $23.00 per hour
