SIUSLAW SD 97J is Hiring a School Counselor, Certified, 1.0 FTE, Siuslaw Elementary School Near Florence, OR

Position begins 2024-2025 school year.

Salary Schedule is based on the 2023-2024 school year, , and may be updated based on current contract negotiations. New hires typically begin at Step 1 on the Salary Schedule. The Siuslaw School District allows step credit the salary scale for years of certified teaching experience.

This is a 10-month/renewable position, that includes benefits of paid medical and leave.

All offers of employment are contingent upon board approval and the applicant’s satisfactory completion of a drug screening test (including marijuana), background and reference checks. Siuslaw School District strives to provide a safe, alcohol and drug free environment for all employees.

TITLE: School Counselor, Certified, 1.0 FTE, Siuslaw Elementary School

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Under the direction of the building principal, in performing counseling and discipline duties, the general functions will include providing information services to students and parents; assisting students in making appropriate decisions; assisting students with problems and aiding students in achieving educational objectives. The following is a sample of duties required by the counselor.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Building Principal and Superintendent

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Oregon School Counselor Licensure with Appropriate Endorsements/Authorization Level.
  • Prefer applicant with experience in a school setting or similar setting.
  • Counseling or teaching experience with various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management.
  • Demonstrated ability to use good professional judgment, to carry out school policies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Establish and maintain regular periods of time when students can meet to discuss personal matters of concern.
  • Provide information and/or referrals to students and families on the variety of counseling services available from different agencies.
  • Work with classroom teachers and other members of the school community to provide ongoing assistance to students in counseling-related areas.
  • Knowledgeable about and experienced in use of response to intervention and PBIS strategies.
  • Communication with appropriate staff and families regarding disposition of office discipline referrals.
  • Provide crisis intervention for students regarding substance abuse, violence, crime and other issues.
  • Make home visits when helpful in assisting students.
  • Help coordinate school triage counseling and school-wide crisis intervention.
  • Cooperatively develop and teach selected units related to counseling concerns.
  • Maintain a guidance resource center to facilitate the counseling program.
  • Coordinate 504 Plans.
  • Attend administrative meetings, staff meetings, IEP meetings or others as requested.
  • Working with Department of Human Services and cases of abuse and coordinating.
  • Inform the Principal of any students requiring additional mental health testing.
  • Adhere to policies of the District and procedures of the department Demonstrates strong personal and professional integrity.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skill in dealing with students, parents, staff and the public.
  • Possesses strong communication skills – verbal and written.
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality when dealing with student, staff and/or parent information.
  • Maintain satisfactory job attendance record.
  • Meet District and/or departmental deadlines.
  • Perform other professional duties as assigned by Principal.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Maintains satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to organize and maintain efficient time schedule.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff, students and the public.
  • Good communication, organization and computer skills.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Emotional and physical stamina to perform duties as required by the designated task, except for temporary disability.
  • Effective oral/written communication skills in order to work collaboratively with a variety of school personnel, as well as parents of students with disabilities and/or unique needs.

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed in a wide variety of locations, including school environments.
  • May work with high stress student, family, or personnel situations.
  • May require occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Involves bending, lifting, crouching, reaching, standing, sitting, walking, fine manipulation,
  • twisting/turning and repetitive movements.
  • Requires the use of computers and office equipment.

MINIMUM TERM OF EMPLOYEMENT: Teacher Contract

SALARY LEVEL: Placement on Certified Salary Schedule

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board's policy on Evaluation.
