Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School invites applications for a full-time position as a teacher in the English Department for the 2024-2025 academic year. Located in Washington, DC, and founded in 1799, Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School educates young women in grades 9 12 in a faith-centered community focused on educational excellence and rooted in the Roman Catholic faith and Salesian tradition.
The ideal candidate is energetic and eager to educate and guide young women at this critical time in their lives; able to challenge talented young women to cultivate a strong point of view and to clearly articulate and defend it; and ready to implement teaching methods that serve diverse learning styles.
As educators in the Visitation tradition, our teachers form lives as well as impart knowledge. As a school, we seek to create challenging and joyful classrooms that cultivate a lifelong love of learning. We’re seeking a candidate who can nurture young women's sense of wonder; awaken students' appreciation for literature's expression of the human experience; and build their confidence in their abilities. The ideal candidate will help students learn how to read with both a critical eye and compassionate heart and how to communicate effectively in both speech and writing. To learn more about what it means to be a Visitation educator, we encourage you to read Educating the Heart and Mind, a brief pamphlet that outlines the six goals of a Visitation education.
Successful candidates should have a strong academic background in American and world literature, grammar, and composition, as well as previous teaching experience in the subject at the secondary level, along with energy, enthusiasm, and a desire to communicate and work with young women. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in both their pedagogy and the literature they teach. Candidates must also be willing to work closely with departmental colleagues in a collaborative setting and to attend school-wide events and regular departmental and faculty meetings. Bachelor’s degree in a related field required, master’s preferred.
