Project Engineer
You are SIRQ’s representative on site.The Owner, Architect and Subcontractors see you as the face of SIRQ.Treat others with respect, be honest and be fair.Deliver a quality job on time and on budget that you can be proud of.The following is a brief guide to the responsibilities of a project engineer. This is not an exhaustive list of duties. Your duties will change depending on the project and the project team.
Provide the Resources the superintendent needs to get the job done. 
Project Engineer
  • Submittal Management
    • Procure, review, submit, distribute
    • Product data, shop drawings, samples, deferred submittals
  • RFI Management
    • Review – do the research to verify the RFI (talk to sub, review drawings & specs), submit (provide all necessary information: details, drawings, pictures, etc.), distribute (to all effected parties), mark up drawings
  • Procurement Log
    • Lead times, track material delivery dates and ensure delivery meets schedule needs, weekly check-ins with trade partners and project team
    • Needs to be functional, concise, and easy to read – company standard log???
  • Meeting Agendas & Minutes
    • Compile reports and agendas for OAC, team meeting, PRs, subcontractor meetings: submittal log, RFI log, PCO log, schedule, procurement log
    • Detailed minutes including ALL action items, review with team before distributing
    • Ensure technology is working (i.e., sound and video for teams or zoom)
  • Document Control
    • Organized (correct naming), SDS sheets (printed in a binder in the job trailer and a QR code to digital files), inspection reports (SWPPP, city, special)
    • Subcontractor checklist: insurance tracking, exhibits, contract execution
    • Know the contract documents inside and out
  • Drawings & Specifications
    • Know the drawings/specifications inside and out
    • Keep drawings up-to-date in Procore and distribute drawing revisions (ASIs, approved PRs, RFIs, etc.) to trade partners
    • Send out any drawing revisions as soon as they are received
  • Cost Control
    • Track all pricing for RFI changes, PRs, ASI changes, etc.
      • Track in a change event – create one for any potential and real cost
      • Always know where pricing is at for different items
    • Ensure there are no scope gaps or overlaps… if there are get pricing or work with subs to reduce overlaps (define scope) … Provide options to project team
  • Quality Control
    • Take daily walks (or whenever onsite – if you have multiple jobs), individually and with the team (superintendent and PM) … note outstanding work, concerns/questions, potential issues/pinch points, etc. DOCUMENT!
    • Setup and be prepared for pre-installation/pre-construction meetings with trade partners
    • Have coordination meetings to discuss work and potential issues before they happen: exterior skins, MEP, structural, etc.
    • OWN IT – BE PROACTIVE and NOT REACTIVE
  • Safety Checks
    • Take safety inspection walks
    • Correct it when you see it… review safety inspection list from Jill and help the super make the needed corrections
  • Closeout
    • Starts during the submittal process
    • Track closeout documents: as-builts, warranty letters, O&Ms, start-up/commissioning reports – compile into one documents or folder for easy access
    • Coordinate and record owner training with: landscape, MEP, fire
  • Punchlist
    • Super drives but PE should help push
    • Help schedule punch list work with superintendent and trade partners
    • Track items in Procore – create locations with QR codes for every room
    • Provide regular updates to ownership and design teams on completed and outstanding items… they need to know we are being proactive in completely their items
  • Relationships
    • Develop relationships with the design team and ownership team: work with them to solve issues before OAC meetings, have answers in those meetings
      • Schedule a weekly call with the design team to discuss issues and roadblocks
    • Develop relationships with trade partners
    • COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE
  • Software
    • Know all software (be the expert)
      • Excel
      • Word
      • Procore
      • Phoenix
      • Bluebeam
    • Go through regular training for software, safety, leadership, soft skills, etc.
  • Go the extra mile
    • Be reliable and accountable to yourself and your team
    • Assist in updating the schedule for the project
    • LEARN and ASK QUESTIONS: be willing to take on extra work, push yourself, and get outside your comfort zone
    • Keep a to-do list and follow-up with others on outstanding action items
