The Clinical instructor will prepare students for the clinical experience through an orientation to policies and procedures, conduct a review with students of prerequisites for individual clinical rotations, and become acquainted with faculty requirements for clinical site experiences. (Each student will have the clinical requirements practice reviewed, as well as prerequisite coursework completed, prior to entry into the clinical workplace).
The Clinical instructor will make known to students in writing and online, the goals and requirements of each course, the nature of the course content and the methods of evaluation to be employed. A clear understanding of the legal liability of the preceptor/clinical instructor role and the purpose of clinical seminar will be reviewed with the students during the first synchronous session and in the course syllabus. Students will apply, synthesize and evaluate content from nursing theory and sciences in the clinical practice setting. Students will work with patients from across the life span.
Clinical Instructors must have a minimum of a BSN with 5 years of experience or an MSN or be matriculated in a Masters in Nursing program. Clinical instructors must be licensed in Massachusetts, as indicated in the employment agreement. It is up to the Clinical Instructor to obtain and maintain all assigned licenses throughout the course of their assignment.
It is expected a Clinical Instructor will spend approximately 8-16 hours a week (depending on the course), inclusive of pre and post-conference, unless alternate arrangements have been made with Simmons Clinical Coordination Office. Semester start and end dates are determined by the college Registrar. Clinical usually starts a week after the semester begins and ends on the date closest to the end of the semester. Clinical faculty is expected to be available for each clinical day during the semester and to conduct an 8-hour day. There is no clinical if your regularly scheduled day falls on a college holiday or if the college closes for bad weather.
