Job Description

As a Baker/Cook at Silver Fern, you will play a vital role in preparing and cooking a variety of dishes, creating a variety of delicious and high-quality baked goods, and ensuring high-quality standards and timely delivery of food orders. You will be responsible for executing menu items, following recipes and portion control guidelines, preparing doughs, batters, and fillings, operating baking and cooking equipment, maintaining cleanliness and organization in the kitchen, and contributing to a positive and efficient work environment. The Cook/Baker will collaborate with the Chef and other kitchen staff to maintain consistent quality and create a memorable dining experience for our guests.

Responsibilities

Food Preparation, Cooking, & Baking

  • Prepare ingredients by washing, chopping, and portioning them according to the recipes and menu requirements.
  • Cook and plate a variety of dishes, ensuring that they are cooked to the proper temperature, taste, and presentation.
  • Prepare doughs, batters, and fillings according to established recipes and production schedules.
  • Bake a variety of products, including bread, rolls, pastries, cakes, cookies, and specialty items.
  • Operate and monitor baking and cooking equipment, such as ovens, mixers, proofing cabinets, burners, and refrigerators/freezers ensuring proper settings and temperatures.
  • Follow recipes, portion control guidelines, baking techniques, timing guidelines, and food safety standards to maintain consistency in taste and quality.
  • Coordinate with the kitchen team to ensure timely delivery of food orders and efficient kitchen operations.

Menu Execution & Quality Control

  • Work closely with the Chef to understand and execute menu items and recipes accurately, ensuring that measurements, ingredients, mixing techniques, and established standards are followed.
  • Ensure that all dishes are prepared and presented according to the established recipes and plating guidelines while maintaining consistency in taste, texture, and appearance of food and baked goods.
  • Monitor inventory of ingredients and supplies, reporting shortages and replenishing as needed.

Kitchen Organization & Cleanliness

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including surfaces, utensils, and equipment.
  • Follow proper food storage procedures and labeling guidelines to minimize waste and ensure freshness.
  • Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines, including proper handwashing, glove usage, hygiene practices, and temperature controls.
  • Follow and monitor temperature guidelines for ingredient storage and baking and cooking processes.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, maintenance needs, or safety hazards to the Chef or a manager.
  • Participate in regular cleaning schedules, such as deep cleaning and sanitization of kitchen surfaces and equipment.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices and regulations regarding food safety and sanitation.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Collaborate with the kitchen team to coordinate production schedules, prioritize tasks, and ensure efficient operations.
  • Communicate with the front-of-house staff regarding order statuses, special requests, and timing.
  • Assist and support fellow kitchen staff during busy periods or when additional help is needed.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment by fostering teamwork, respect, and open communication.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a cook and baker in a restaurant, bakery, or similar food service establishment.
  • Strong knowledge of baking and cooking techniques, food preparation, and kitchen operations.
  • Familiarity with a variety of baked goods, including bread, pastries, cakes, and cookies.
  • Basic understanding of recipe execution, portion control, food presentation, and quality control..
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations and best practices.
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Flexibility to work during evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Demands: Ability to stand and walk for long periods, lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds, use a ladder to reach tall storage, withstand exposure to extreme heat, steam, and cold present in a kitchen environment, cut and chop foods and perform other related tasks with dexterity.
