dThe Continuous Improvement (CI) Specialist is responsible for shaping Silver Bay Seafoods’ innovation and continuous improvement efforts. Reporting to the CI Director, this position requires an individual who is a natural problem solver, able to draw inferences from process details, and link these inferences to the overall SBS mission by considering business objectives in identifying process improvements.

In this critical role, you will provide leadership, coaching, support, and project management to the organization to support the company’s transformation. You will be responsible for monitoring the existing production systems and technology, troubleshooting and problem-solving issues, training employees, presenting, and recommending improvements to seafood production systems and technology. This position covers primary and secondary processing in Alaska and will ensure that all improvements implemented are consistent with all Regulatory, Quality, and Corporate Compliance requirements. Qualified candidates will have an understanding of process mapping, business process re-engineering, and are effective managing at the change of speed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties in this position include the following:

  • Acts as Subject Matter Expert (SME) on all production and production related systems. Works with operations management, supervisors, and leads to identify improvement opportunities in cross-functional teams and assists in providing a strategy to meet organizational goals.
  • Proactively Identifies process problems prohibiting SBS from executing our strategic vision.
  • Drive the company to a greater value through understanding the business, making complex decisions, and creating new and different.
  • Identifies new approaches and solutions to business issues identified through analysis of processes and understanding of the organization.
  • Own, tracks and reports metrics related to operational excellence programs and appropriately adjusts implementation strategy.
  • Develops business case, scopes problems, and takes a lead in documenting new processes and procedures, facilitate testing, training, user acceptance, leads rollout of identified solutions.
  • Provides leadership and direction either as a member or leader of project teams.
  • Facilitates process workshops that involve eliciting process requirements and liaising with users.
  • Documents procedures and presents new process designs to partners for discussion.
  • Presents successes, areas of improvement, and overall results of various operational excellence programs to management teams.
  • Provides functional and process expertise to production and technology teams.
  • Monitors, measures, and provides feedback on system performance.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

  • Analytical & Problem Solving - can dissect complex workplace issues, identify root causes, and create effective solutions. You can use data to make informed decisions and spot trends that might impact on our company's people.
  • Technical Skills - Advanced knowledge of ERP systems used in seafood processing. Working knowledge of relevant production and technology systems used in seafood processing experience.
  • Change Agent - As our CI Specialist you must be able to navigate resistance to change and effectively manage change initiatives. You have a unique skill in developing and implementing communication plans to keep stakeholders informed, with the ability to build a culture of continuous improvement within the organization.
  • Project Management – You plan, execute, and manage continuous improvement projects effectively. Familiarity with project management methodologies like Waterfall and bring experience using project management software (e.g., MS Project, Jira, Trello).
  • Intermediate-advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, ERP, CAD/AutoCAD, and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) related systems. Proficient in Excel & Microsoft Office - able to use MS Word to edit text documents, create templates, and automate the creation of tables of content. Strong Pivot Table, Data Validation, INDEX/MATCH, and Power Query skills. Power BI experience preferred.

Education and Experience

  • Degree in Business Administration, Organizational Development, Operations, Process Engineering, or related field; or comparable experience and/or other training/certification.
  • Two years’ experience in Operations, Continuous Improvement successfully leading and implementing process improvement initiatives.
  • Seafood industry experience strongly preferred with an understanding of relevant safety regulations and compliance requirements in the seafood industry (a plus). Experience in high volume food production and manufacturing facilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of seafood or other food plant manufacturing systems and technology.
  • Six Sigma or similar LEAN and Process Improvement certification is preferred. In-depth knowledge of other Continuous Improvement methodologies along with practical experience with their application
  • Proficiency with process mapping tools like flowcharts and value stream mapping.

Physical Demands

While performing duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit; handle or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Travel across Silver Bay locations will be required, some of which are located in remote areas of Alaska. While onsite at Silver Bay production locations, the employee will be working in a loud, wet, and noisy seafood processing plant environment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment and Schedule

This position is for our Seattle, WA corporate office. Open to hybrid (for right candidate), would require at least 3 days per week in office. Due to the seasonal nature of the business, you should be prepared to spend up to six (6) months in Alaska. The business needs can change and as such the candidate should be prepared to work in an operational role, suited to their area of expertise.

Salary Disclosure

The typical base pay range for this role is $74,411-$95,000 per year. Individual base pay depends on various factors, in addition to primary work location, such as complexity and responsibility of role, job duties/requirements, and relevant experience and skills.
