Jalao NYC, located inside Radio Hotel in Washington Heights is seeking a full-time Server Captain.
About the Hotel and Restaurant
The Radio Hotel is a 221room hotel, mixed-use high rise, located at 2420 Amsterdam Avenue in the Washington Heights area in Northern Manhattan. The property features flexible meeting space, and the Jalao Restaurant. Guests can escape from the streets of New York City to the brightly colored paradise of the Dominican Republic while dining at Jalao. The Jalao Restaurant serves Dominican food in vibrant and cultural surroundings right in the heart of NYC’s Washington Heights Neighborhood.

About You

Essential Job Functions

  • Ensure that guests have a pleasant and memorable dining experience.
  • Monitors setup/breakdown, maintenance, cleanliness and safety of dining areas.
  • Reports to shift manager and assists manager with monitoring staff, side work and table checks.
  • Assist in overseeing cleanliness and sanitation standards in compliance with state and local health regulations throughout the restaurant pre, during, and post service, including, but not limited to the following duties:
    • Setting up work stations, cleanliness and storage of dishes, filling dish machines, ensuring correct chemical levels, maintaining efficient traffic patterns throughout restaurant.
  • Assist in controlling and analyzing cost, breakage, quality of support provided to banquets and other areas, condition and cleanliness of equipment, and guest satisfaction. 
  • Assist in educating employees on current safety issues to ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations.
    • Inform management of hazardous situations, emergencies or threats to the security of guests, employees or hotel assets. Notify Executive Steward if repairs are needed. Ensure that equipment is prepared and operational for the following day’s work.
  • Assist in determining the minimum and maximum stocks and control the par stocks of all materials and equipment. 
  • Responsible for overseeing all staff to ensure opening/closing side work is completed and restaurant is cleaned and restored to manager’s satisfaction for next shift.
  • Alert manager of any issues that arise during service, ie; unsatisfied guests, low stock of materials.
  • Ensure that shift cash tip count is completed promptly and returned to a manager.
  • Attend and participate in daily briefings as needed to obtain optimal results.
  • Promote teamwork and quality service through daily communication and coordination with other departments. Key departmental contacts include Catering, Banquets, Outlets, Maintenance, and Guest Services. 
  • May interact with outside contacts:
    • Guests – to ensure their total satisfaction
  • May conduct inventories as needed.
  •  May assist with other duties as assigned including but not limited to assistance with food dish-up, completing set-up sheets, assisting with set-up and break-down for various events, etc.
  • To follow all company policies, procedures, and safety standards, including proper equipment handling to avoid injury to yourself and others.
  • To maintain the cleanliness and safety of work areas at all times.
  • To attend all mandatory meetings as directed.
  • To perform other tasks, including cross-training, as directed.
  • To help keep staff moral positive.
Essential Experience/Aptitudes
  • Act as team leader for all bussers and servers.
  • Extensive food and beverage knowledge, including fine dining and wine service standards.
  • Previous experience in several restaurant functions.
  • Displays an ability to effectively communicate with guests and team members.
Desired Skills/Experience
  • Must be detail oriented, organized and efficient.
  • Possess a courteous, professional and friendly manner. 
  • Utilizes strong reading and writing abilities when assisting in the scheduling of the stewarding staff, or when monitoring inventory.
  • Effective in problem solving, reasoning, motivating, and training.

Essential Physical Abilities

  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Stands and walks short distances throughout shift.
  • Constantly required to handle and move objects weighing up to 50lbs. over moderate distances.
  • Bends, stoops, reaches, pushes, and lifts to perform routine tasks. 
  • Must be able to work under pressure.
