SierTeK Ltd. is seeking a Biomedical Research Laboratory Manager to support an opportunity at the University of Maryland Medical Center (Dr. R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center).

POSITION OVERVIEW SECTION

The employee shall provide biomedical research laboratory manager support for 711 Human Performance Wing (711 HPW), Human Effectiveness Directorate, Air and Space Biosciences Division, Product Development Branch, Enroute Care (RHBAM). The employee shall support the conduct of research to address current USAF health, safety, and performance research needs and MAJCOM-identified capability gaps. Contractor personnel shall interface with 711HPW/RHBAM leadership and staff, other professionals across the Air Force Research Laboratory, Air Force Medical Services, the Defense Health Agency, the Department of Defense, and the University of Maryland leadership, staff, and subject matter experts. Contractor assistance under this task order shall be for use by RHBAM at the Baltimore, MD Geographically Separated Unit of RHBAM.

Essential Job Functions

Laboratory Operations Management:

  • Coordinate and manage day-to-day laboratory activities.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols, ethical guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Implement new programs, tests, methods, and instrumentation.
  • Manage lab personnel daily duties, including training and performance management.
  • Foster a collaborative and productive work environment.
  • Schedule and assign employees based on lab operational needs.

Research Project Coordination:

  • Oversee the planning, initiation, and execution of research projects.
  • Monitor progress and ensure adherence to timelines.
  • Collaborate with principal investigators and other stakeholders.
  • Maintains medical laboratory productivity by monitoring the workload of functional areas.

Budget Management:

  • Develop and manage the laboratory budget.
  • Allocate resources efficiently and seek cost-saving opportunities.

Quality Control and Assurance:

  • Achieves quality results by participating in the hospital quality assurance program.
  • Implement and maintain quality control measures for experiments and data collection.
  • Ensure compliance with good laboratory practices (GLP) and other relevant standards.
  • Adheres to specimen preparation procedures.

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Establishes quality standards to maintain medical laboratory equipment performance.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and arrange for repairs or replacements as needed.

Data Management:

  • Implement data management systems and protocols.
  • Identifies informational needs to manage medical laboratory information systems.
  • Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with privacy regulations.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Facilitate communication among laboratory members and with external collaborators.
  • Foster a culture of open communication and collaboration.

Grant and Proposal Support:

  • Prepare grant applications and research proposals.
  • Track and manage grant funds and expenditures.

Professional Development:

  • Stay informed about advancements in the field and emerging technologies.
  • Support the professional development of laboratory staff.
  • Complies with state and professional continuing education licensure requirements.

Environmental Health and Safety:

  • Promote and enforce adherence to safety protocols and procedures.
  • Coordinate with environmental health and safety officers to ensure compliance.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of laboratory activities.
  • Prepare regular reports for senior management or funding agencies.

Qualifications

Mandatory Qualifications: The Biomedical Research Laboratory Manager is a pivotal role that requires a combination of scientific expertise, leadership skills, and organizational abilities to ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of the laboratory.

  • Possess a minimum master's degree in a STEM field with a minimum three (3) years' demonstrated experience in research/translational lab.
  • Possess at least one (1) year demonstrated experience with large animal research models (swine).
  • Possess demonstrated expertise with ordering, procuring, and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Possess minimum one (1) year demonstrated experience developing and executing research protocols.
  • Possess demonstrated experience following industry standards and safety regulations for handling samples.
  • Possess the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business inquiries, including technical RFQ/RFP.
  • Possess the ability to work with veterinary staff to set up and prepare experiments.
  • Possess demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to track and manage inventory.
  • Demonstrate the following work characteristics: ability to work independently; attention to detail; extensive organizational skills; initiative, ability, and drive to solve practical problems; excellent multitasking skills; ability to professionally interact with all levels of personnel.
  • Demonstrate expertise on Microsoft Office programs and laboratory management software such as lab chart.
  • Have a signed Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) in place with their company based on the potential access to confidential, proprietary, and/or sensitive information. NDA shall be provided to the Government Program Manager by start of performance.

Highly Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with managing military funded grants.
