Responsibilities

Our program provides the highest level of care, and has received a Clinic Care Partner designation from the Spina Bifida Association (SBA). We have a large patient population with a variety of spinal dysraphisms and see pediatric patients from 3 months to 20 years of age. Care is provided through single specialty (physiatry) and multidisciplinary clinics (physiatry, urology, orthopedics, neurosurgery) with same day radiologic and laboratory testing. Responsibilities include working closely with the pediatric physiatrist/medical director to provide clinical care, patient and family education and care coordination for this large and medically complex patient population.

The nurse practitioner will be an integral part of all spina bifida clinics, which are held 1-3 half days a week. Depending on the type of clinic, they may perform direct clinical care, facilitate the development of a comprehensive care plan between specialists or provide patient and family education/counseling. The nurse practitioner will be available to triage and see patients between clinics for any urgent issues related to spina bifida, typically these include wounds, bowel management issues and urinary tract infections. Experience in wound care and management of neurogenic bowel and bladder preferred.

Indirect patient care will include collaborating with the clinic nurse and medical assistant on the clinic schedule and flow of patients through the clinic, testing and orthotics. Occasionally, the nurse practitioner may assist in inpatient care of patients admitted for wound care or bowel training. The nurse practitioner will participate in the organization and implementation of California Children’s Services team case conferences.

Optimal care of persons with spina bifida requires excellent care coordination. The team receives training in care coordination. The nurse practitioner will coordinate care between specialists at Shriners, community hospitals, primary care physicians, schools, therapists, patients and families. They may assist the medical director and case manager with team training and tracking of care coordination outcomes.
