Sheppard Pratt School in Rockville is a nonpublic special education day school serving students aged 5-12 (grades K-12) with a range of needs including autism, development delay, emotional disability, multiple disabilities, other health impairments, specific learning disability, and speech or language impairments. Our small class sizes and individualized instruction ensure that students receive the attention and support they need to succeed academically and emotionally. Our team provides a supportive and structured environment that integrates specialized academic instruction, counseling, transition services, and behavioral modification tailored to each student’s unique needs.

What to expect.

You will play a crucial role in providing clinical mental health support to students with emotional and behavioral issues, including autism. You will support students and their families in overcoming personal and environmental challenges.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Conducting individual, family, and group counseling sessions to address personal and environmental obstacles hindering students’ psychosocial functioning.
  • Acting as a vital member of the treatment team by contributing to the development, implementation, and evaluating treatment plans.
  • Collaborating with school systems and supporting families in accessing relevant community resources, while coordinating with local social service agencies when necessary.
  • Developing and assisting in executing discharge and aftercare plans to ensure ongoing support for students post-treatment.

What we need from you.

Social Workers working in schools are required to meet both criteria below:

    1. Present verification of having successfully completed a three-credit course in the area of special education from an accredited institute of higher education at time of appointment
    2. Have an active MSDE certification as a School Social Worker at time of appointment or must apply for MSDE SW certification within 30 days of accepting a school Social Work assignment, and must maintain this certification while working in any school assignment.
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • One of the following at time of hire:
    • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)
    • Licensed Certified Social Worker – Clinical (LCSW-C)
    • Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC)
    • Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC)
  • Social workers filling this position must hold an active MSDE School Social Worker certification at time of appointment. If you don’t have one, you must apply for the certification within 30 days of accepting the position.
