Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP is Hiring a Remote Litigation Managing Counsel

Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP, a global Am Law 50 firm, is seeking a Litigation Managing Counsel to support West Coast operations.
We prefer candidates who can work from our Downtown Los Angeles or Century City office but will consider other candidates who can work from one of our other California offices.
The other offices we are considering are Orange County, Downtown San Diego, Del Mar, San Francisco, or Silicon Valley. There is only one opening.
The Litigation Managing Counsel works within the Firm’s Office of the General Counsel and reports directly to the Assistant General Counsel.
The Litigation Managing Counsel will provide expertise and guidance to attorneys on court rules and litigation procedure, oversee court filings in California state and federal courts; act as intermediary between attorneys and the Docket & Calendar department with regard to litigation deadlines and events.
Responsibilities:
  • Respond to procedural inquiries and questions, including court research at the direction of attorneys and staff, and advise attorneys and staff as to same.
  • Review draft filings for compliance with court rules.
  • Oversee and train staff to handle electronic filings in assigned courts; handle filings if necessary.
  • Monitor filings in open cases and advise attorneys and staff as to document submissions to Docket & Calendar department; monitor work of Docket & Calendar department.
  • Assist with maintenance of basic court forms and exemplars for use in litigation in California state and federal courts.
  • Monitor case progress in assigned courts, obtain copies of court filings, decisions and orders, obtain docket updates and communicate case status changes to responsible attorneys.
  • Keep abreast of rule changes and case law with regard to procedure, and advise attorneys as to same; liaise with court personnel with regard to questions about court procedures, rules and policies.
  • Assist with departmental projects as needed.
Essential Functions of Job:
  • Collaborate with attorneys, staff, and personnel in the Docket & Calendar department and the Office of General Counsel to maintain litigation docket and calendar and help ensure filings meet court requirements.
  • Develop and maintain best practices for e-filing in assigned courts.
  • Understand and keep up to date on all filing rules, procedures and judge’s individual practices. Manage case-specific information in responsible jurisdictions.
  • Balance and coordinate immediate tasks such as filings with regular tasks such as monitoring docketing and calendaring and long-term projects.
  • Effectively communicate and present information as well as respond to procedural inquiries and questions from attorneys and staff.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Position will be responsible for training and overseeing e-filers in California state and federal courts.
Qualifications and Experience
Required Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience, either in a managing attorneys’ office in a large law firm, or as a practicing litigator in California state and federal court.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, effectively and professionally, in writing and orally, with firm attorneys, staff and administration, third-party vendors, and court personnel.
  • Highly proficient in searching and retrieving information from court-related databases (e.g., PACER, Bloomberg Law, LexMachina) and other on-line sources of case information.
  • Possess excellent customer service, time-management, communication and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with docket management software (e.g., CourtAlert, eDockets, CompuLaw or equivalent).
  • Must be highly knowledgeable regarding litigation practice in the relevant court systems and their rules, and be able to quickly and accurately determine which filings and documents trigger future deadlines.
  • Must be comfortable and familiar with locating, accessing and navigating various court websites and databases.
  • Must have experience supervising staff with regard to the above.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience in a managing attorneys’ office or as a litigator in California state and federal courts is preferred.
Education
Required: Juris Doctor
License and Certification
Required: Admitted to practice law.
Preferred: Admitted to practice law in California.
Computer/Software Knowledge
Required: Working knowledge of docket management software (e.g., CourtAlert, eDockets, CompuLaw, or equivalent).
Work Environment
  • The current Firm policy is hybrid–working in the office a minimum of 3 days per week, and working from home the rest of the week (subject to change).
  • After hours and weekend work will be required on occasion as the workload requires.
Travel Requirements
Up to 10%. Travel to various SMRH California offices as needed.
The salary range for this position is $150,000 to $200,000 per year.
