Shelton School is Hiring an Assistant Head 5th - 8th Near Dallas, TX

June Shelton School & Evaluation Center enjoys the distinction of being the world’s largest independent school for bright children with learning differences. Founded in 1976, Shelton is dedicated to making a difference by serving and empowering the lives of students who learn differently. While the school is clearly the centerpiece of its mission, Shelton is more than a school. It encompasses three other major components, all open to the community—a speech and language therapy program, an evaluation center, and a teacher-training program. Shelton is actively involved with research and collaborates with major medical institutions in the Dallas area, including Children’s Medical Center and UT Southwestern Medical Center. The Shelton School is a co-educational, non-sectarian school that serves approximately 900 students with learning differences in grades EC to 12. The Shelton School is accredited by Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS).

Purpose: Assists in planning and implementing the education and administration of the Middle School.
Qualifications & Skills:
  • Minimum of five years of classroom teaching experience and previous leadership experience is required.
  • College graduate with education background. Master's degree in Education preferred.
  • Knowledge about learning differences and the social-emotional development of middle school students
  • Ability to proactively problem-solve for students, parents, and teachers, demonstrate sound judgment when making independent decisions, and remain calm when handling emergencies.
  • Must have basic computer skills and technology skills.
  • Must have a positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Utilize good humor and even temperament when working with various Shelton constituencies.
  • Possess strong written and oral communication skills and listening skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to receive and act on suggestions and input from staff, students, and parents are required.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, parents, and staff. Display a positive and supportive attitude toward school policies.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Assist the Head of Middle School in overseeing the educational program of all students and the activities of all personnel.
Essential Functions:
  • Regular and punctual attendance are essential to the successful performance of this job. Because of the daily interaction with students, parents, and colleagues, it is essential that the person in this position maintains good attendance.
  • In coordination with the Human Resources department, assist the Middle School Head in the recruitment, selection and in-service training of the Middle School faculty.
  • Oversee specific curriculum areas as assigned.
  • Evaluate teachers, as needed, and document areas needing attention.
  • Help new teachers with curriculum needs.
  • Model teaching procedures when necessary.
  • Teach classes as assigned.
  • Assist in the coordination of the Middle School curriculum with the Middle School Head.
  • Assist in the ordering of materials needed for curriculum.
  • Assist in testing and evaluation of student progress, including achievement testing.
  • Organize and implement Stanford testing, Aim for Success, and Freedom from Chemical Dependency.
  • Assist in the review of all course grades and reports for Middle School students and report to the Middle School Head.
  • Assist in coordination of the maintenance and security pertaining to Middle School student records.
  • Collect data in May re: student aggregate files and future class placement.
  • Assist Middle Head with scheduling of fall classes.
  • Assist in coordination of special events; Open House, Grandparent’s Day, Citizenship Assemblies, advisory parties, end of the year Awards Assembly.
  • Assist in coordination of field trips and class trips.
  • Chaperone field and class trips as needed.
  • Organize teacher coverage for field trips.
  • Assist Middle School Head meeting with prospective new families.
  • Assist scheduling visitors.
  • Assist with co-middle school assistant heads summer school responsibilities.
  • Assist in scheduling and communication with private therapists.
  • Assist in communication to parents.
  • Assist the Middle School Head with any other duties as assigned.
