Sheldon Independent School District is Hiring a Civil Air Patrol Instructor (CAP) (6-8) CE King Middle School Near Houston, TX

Civil Air Patrol (“CAP”) is the auxiliary program for the U.S. Air Force and, through their Cadet Program, is available to youth as young as age 11. The Mission of the CAP Cadet Program is to “transform youth into dynamic Americans and aerospace leaders” through a multi-faceted curriculum in leadership, aerospace (STEM, flight, and rocketry), fitness, and character. While CAP is accessible to all youth nationwide as a community service organization outside of school, Sheldon ISD was one of the pioneer school districts to offer CAP as a year-long middle school course/three-year continuing elective program for Middle School Physical Education (PE) credit. Youth joining CAP are eligible for lifetime membership in the Civil Air Patrol but are not obligated to do so nor to join the military upon completion (though C.E. King High School does feature an active, accredited, and award-winning Air Force JROTC program that features many former Sheldon ISD CAP Cadets). CAP Cadets do have uniform requirements on select school days and have after-school, weekend, and/or summer activities periodically as part of their training.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Texas Educator Certification in any area that covers grades 6-8, though certification in Physical Education and/or Health Education is preferred. Candidates who are not yet certified will need to enroll in and complete an approved Alternative Certification Program.

  • U.S. Military experience and/or experience teaching CAP or JROTC are strongly preferred.

  • Candidates will either need to be current members of the Civil Air Patrol or gain membership in CAP upon hire.

  • Candidates will have to be approved by both Sheldon ISD and the Civil Air Patrol in order to serve in this position, and the instructor and local CAP program (“squadron”) must remain accredited with the Civil Air Patrol annually under the leadership of the Teacher/Squadron Commander.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Continually meet all of the responsibilities expected of all certified educators in Sheldon ISD

  • Provide leadership and high standards of instruction

  • Manage the CAP instructional program, operations, inventory, and cadet staff at the campus level, including implementing approved CAP Cadet Program curriculum and cadet membership/promotion requirements

  • Oversee compliance with both district and CAP policies/requirements, including maintaining accreditation with CAP and all related/required Cadet records

  • Provide for the organization, supervision, and instruction at related co-curricular and extra-curricular campus, unit, CAP, and/or community events or training requirements (including events that occur after school hours, on weekends, or during school holidays/summer)

  • Recruit and retain students into the campus CAP program

  • Collaborate with campus and district administration, other district CAP instructional staff, and high school AFJROTC staff on the successful implementation of related initiatives

Primary Location: C.E. King Middle School

Salary Range: Based on a 220-day contract
