Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general direction, supports and directly engages in meeting the company’s mission, goals and objectives.; provides sound recommendations for action and significant assistance in formulating policies and procedures; plans, coordinates and participates in training staff engaged in shipping hazardous materials (Haz/Mat) /dangerous goods (DG); provides training for and implements procedures and safety; represents the company and acts as liaison with carriers and clients (as appropriate) on hazardous material issues; and performs related duties as assigned.

Incumbents are responsible for coordinating the operations of the hazardous materials/dangerous goods shipping, which includes providing training to personnel on safety and response procedures for hazardous materials spills, providing on-scene expertise during HazMat spills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Individuals in this job may not perform all the duties listed below, nor do the listed examples of duties include all similar and related duties that may be assigned to this position.

  1. Assists in developing and administering best-in-class processes to ensure hazardous materials and dangerous goods are transported safely and in compliance with applicable DOT (49 CFR), IATA, and IMO.
  2. Leads the Hazardous Materials (HazMat) and Dangerous Goods (DG) shipping department.
  3. Ensures related department’s HazMat/DG paperwork is accurate, complete, and timely in accordance with IATA, DOT (49 CFR parts 100-185), and IMO.
  4. Review HazMat documentation of others as necessary for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
  5. Use and train others in FedEx Ship Manager, UPS World Ship, and other HazMat/DG shipping systems.
  6. Engages with hazmat carriers/FedEx, UPS, others, to resolve issues (erroneous customer returns, claims of improper documentation, etc…)
  7. Performs other duties as assigned (e.g. Support other non-Haz/non-DG shipping activities.
  8. Understand shipping systems to address issues or recommend repairs or enhancements.
  9. Effectively trains, documents, and communicates clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing with staff at all levels.
  10. Must complete all basic and re-currency training for spill clean-up.
  11. Maintains a good working relationship with all team members, stakeholders and customers.
  12. Maintains an accurate inventory of HazMat/DG shipping supplies: corrugated, labels, forms, etc.
  13. Works with management to arrange Hazardous Communications (HAZ COMM) training with all staff as required under OSHA regulations.
  14. Serves as emergency response coordinator for hazardous material spills; Coordinates response of crews or hazardous material response contractors during regular working hours and afterhours. Coordinates with hazardous materials contractors for the proper handling, packaging, labeling and transporting of hazardous waste for disposal; writes necessary reports to ensure compliance.
  15. Maintains knowledge of current and new local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to hazardous materials shipping, including but not limited to DOT, IATA, IMO and other relevant agencies.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Leads the Hazardous Materials and DG shipping department.
  2. Train personnel within the department
  3. Communicate with transport companies (i.e. FedEx, UPS, LTL, TL carriers)
  4. Keep upward management informed of risks or other issues that may impact deliverables.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum of 2 years of experience in hazardous materials (Dangerous Goods, DG) handling, shipping, and/or receiving
  2. Knowledge of federal regulations related to the handling and transport of hazardous materials/DG (e.g. IATA, DOT, IMO, OSHA, EPA)
  3. Currently Certified to IATA, DOT (49CFR), IMO to ship hazardous materials/DG.
  4. Extensive experience with 49 CFR parts 100-185 (Hazardous Materials Regulations as required by Department of Transportation)
  5. Knowledge of Quality Systems (ISO – 13485, 9000, 9002, etc.) is a plus.
  6. Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  7. Knowledge for safe handling of Flammable Liquids, Toxic (Oral, Dermal, Inhale/Vapors, Organ, Eye)
  8. Exceedingly high level of accuracy, organizational skills, and attention to detail
  9. Ability to acquire TSA Certification (as required)
  10. Ability to exhibit sound and accurate judgment and make timely decisions.
  11. Acts with a sense of urgency and purpose; models and motivates this behavior for other staff.
  12. Ability to prioritize and plan work activities, using time efficiently and developing realistic action plans.
  13. Extremely customer-service focused for both internal and external customers; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with both customers and staff.
  14. Ability to work independently with minimal or sporadic direct supervision; self-starter/self- motivated.
  15. Flexibility in schedule to adjust to business needs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. High-School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Certified to IATA, DOT (49CFR), IMO to ship hazardous materials/dangerous goods.
  3. Minimum two years of experience in hazardous materials/dangerous goods shipping.
  4. Experience in a Logistics or 3PL organization is preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  1. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively train, document, and communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing with staff at all levels.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  1. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel and Outlook.
  2. Proficiency with FedEx Ship Manager and UPS World Ship.
  3. Proficiency with Extensiv/3PL Central preferred.
  4. Ability to quickly learn new programs/software.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Mix of sitting six (6) hours or more per day; standing and/or walking four (4) hours or more per day.
  2. Six (6) or more hours per day doing computer work.
  3. Ability to lift, bend, reach, kneel and stoop.
  4. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
  5. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)/safety gear must be worn as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is conducted in both the office and warehouse environments. Employees will primarily work in the warehouse and are exposed to loud noise levels, vibration, chemicals, dust, mechanical hazards, and moving objects or other vehicles. May be exposed to cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, chemicals, mechanical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing policies and procedures.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. No travel is anticipated for this position.
