Founded in 1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s School (SSM) is an Episcopal, co-educational, college preparatory, independent boarding/day school serving 400 students in grades 6th-postgraduate from 37 states and over 30 countries. By cultivating creative and independent thinking, SSM fosters the transformation of its students to become citizens of integrity for an ever-changing world.
Shattuck-St. Mary's School offers a sheltered English immersion history course at the middle school level and the upper school level called Introduction to Historical Studies (IHS). IHS is a year-long course designed for learners of English covering key events and concepts in World History at the middle school level and United States history at the upper school level. The courses are designed to help students enhance their academic skills, such as note taking, as well as historical thinking skills, such as chronological thinking and analyzing primary sources. Additionally, the courses further support English language development with a particular emphasis on expanding academic vocabulary. This teacher may also facilitate a section of ESL Seminar, a tutorial course for students who have exited ESL but continue to benefit from support with their written work.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced teacher to lead our Introduction to Historical Studies (IHS) courses at the middle school level and upper school levels for the 2024-25 school year. The successful candidate will have a background in teaching ESL and history and will possess the ability to foster academic and historical thinking skills crucial for students' success in future social studies classes.
