Shattuck-St. Mary's School is Hiring a FULL TIME TEACHER – Sheltered English Immersion History 2024-25 Near Faribault, MN

Purpose:

Founded in 1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s School (SSM) is an Episcopal, co-educational, college preparatory, independent boarding/day school serving 400 students in grades 6th-postgraduate from 37 states and over 30 countries. Set on a beautiful 250-acre campus south of Minneapolis/St. Paul in Minnesota, SSM offers a mix of traditional and progressive education. By cultivating creative and independent thinking, SSM fosters the transformation of its students to become citizens of integrity for an ever-changing world.

Shattuck-St. Mary's School offers a sheltered English immersion history course at the middle school level and the upper school level called Introduction to Historical Studies (IHS). IHS is a year-long course designed for learners of English covering key events and concepts in World History at the middle school level and United States history at the upper school level. The courses are designed to help students enhance their academic skills, such as note taking, as well as historical thinking skills, such as chronological thinking and analyzing primary sources. Additionally, the courses further support English language development with a particular emphasis on expanding academic vocabulary. This teacher may also facilitate a section of ESL Seminar, a tutorial course for students who have exited ESL but continue to benefit from support with their written work.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced teacher to lead our Introduction to Historical Studies (IHS) courses at the middle school level and upper school levels for the 2024-25 school year. The successful candidate will have a background in teaching ESL and history and will possess the ability to foster academic and historical thinking skills crucial for students' success in future social studies classes.

Shattuck St. Mary’s School is a boarding/day school and faculty members are expected to be involved with both co-curricular activities and standard residential life duties involved with a residential school setting.

Additional Information:

  • Candidate will be comfortable instructing learners grades 6-12 in an innovative, English-immersive educational environment, familiar with technology in the classroom.
  • This individual should be willing and able to teach and mentor high-achieving, average, and struggling students who may be adjusting to American educational traditions and expectations.
  • Candidate will be open to collaborating with the ESL teachers in their support of ESL students and in the development of course expectations.
  • Candidate will also be willing to aid in evaluations for school admissions and lead or aid in program exit assessments, progress evaluations, guidance for non-ESL instructors, and learning experiences outside of the classroom.
  • Candidate will participate in residential life duty, including serving as an adjunct or live-in dorm parent as needed; serve as a student advisor; and lead co-curricular activities.

Qualifications:

  • At least 2-4 years’ experience teaching English Language Learners; however, we will consider first year teaching candidates. Experience teaching history preferred.
  • Demonstrated capacity in supporting the English language development of high school students from a variety of language backgrounds.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field; Master’s Degree or relevant coursework preferred.

In support of its pursuit of academic and scholarly excellence, Shattuck-St. Mary’s School is committed to creating a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff that is dedicated to the fundamental principles of equal opportunity treatment in education and employment regardless of age, color, disability, gender identity, national origin, political ideology, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status. The school encourages and is eager to consider applications from individuals whose differing backgrounds, beliefs, ideas, and life experiences will further enrich the diversity of its educational community.
