As a Protection Engineer you will be a part of supporting our expanding utility consulting and renewable energy services business. This highly motivated and qualified individual will perform design work on high voltage electrical projects including transmission line, substation and renewable energy projects. The list of possible duties includes those noted below as well as other opportunities that may arise. Typical clients are Electric Utilities and Independent Power Generators. You should also possess the desire to accept additional responsibilities and support the further development and growth of the office. This position will require relocation to one of our three Maine offices, Bangor, Augusta, or Westbrook.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year

Typical Duties of the Protection Engineer:

  • Perform engineering services related to relay protection and control systems
  • Develop drawing packages for protection systems in high and medium voltage applications
  • Perform protection studies and analysis, and develop basis documents and relay setting files
  • Plan and coordinate projects with limited supervision
  • Participate in preparing proposals for associated scope

Responsibilities of the Protection Engineer:

Will perform, supervise or coordinate the work associated with assigned projects. Ensures a developmental environment, providing full disclosure on project assignments and encourages others. Position includes:

  • Work estimates and the development of proposals
  • Client communication and development
  • Field work and testing support as needed
  • Review and understand client specific standards and requirements
  • Manage project deliverables with the objective of delivering on-time and under-budget
  • Communication with department management and project team
  • Train and develop personnel

Education / Experience / Training of the Protection Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology required
  • 2-5 years of experience in an engineering consulting firm or other related work environment is required
  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignment
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience with electric utility or renewable energy projects required
  • Familiarity with typical protection applications and standards such as transformers, line protection, generation protection, and other applicable schemes is required
  • Ability to interpret schematics, control logic, wiring diagrams and device programing is required
  • Proficiency with microprocessor-based relay protection products and software solutions is required
  • Experience with standard communication protocols, pilot protection schemes and SCADA systems is preferred
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite is required
  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience which will ultimately result in PE licensure
  • Must successfully complete drug screening and background check, including 7-year criminal history check and Motor Vehicle Record check
  • Valid driver’s license required

Environmental demands and work environment for a Protection Engineer at SGC Engineering are listed below. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Required to travel up to 10% to other offices, client meetings or for site inspections and construction support.
  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity, such as keyboarding; most of the work day;
  • Required to exert physical effort in handling objects up to 30 pounds rarely;
  • Required to exert physical effort in navigating rough native terrain, during field inspection occasionally
