The lifeguard performs generally routine or standardized work with primary responsibility for the protection of human life at the James E.

Chandler Pool Complex or the Crotched Mountain waterfront. Work is performed with a reasonable degree of independence and under the supervision / direction of the Assistant Vice President in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Aquatics Department and Crotched Mountain.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

• Performs generally routine or standardized work with primary responsibility for the protection of human life at Crotched Mountain.
• Must demonstrate and maintain to the satisfaction of the Aquatics Director, a working knowledge of the emergency systems.
• Continuous alertness required in observing swimmers to insure conformance with established rules and regulations relative to the conduct of the facility and in alleviating potential hazards to prevent accident or drowning.
• Make occasional contacts with individuals beyond immediate associates for the purpose of enforcement of rules and regulations of the facility, particularly in the functions of water safety and the saving of human life.
• Responsible for supervising and coordinating a general water therapy program designed to offer various recreational and therapeutic outlets to people limited only by their ability to participate and materials, games and equipment available.
• Responsible for maintaining equipment assigned and having the lifesaving equipment arranged in readiness at all times.
• Uses lifesaving equipment and physical ability in emergencies and utilizes approved first aid measures when necessary.
• Applies first aid for cuts and bruises when required. Staying within the limits training, the lifeguard must be able to provide the initial emergency care necessary to sustain life and to maintain life support until qualified medical personnel arrive.
• Positions him / herself to the best advantage on the pool deck, and maintains constant alertness for quick action in an emergency.
• Enforces pool regulations.
• Responsible for maintaining cleanliness of the pools and other related facilities, as required by immediate supervisor.

Carries out routine maintenance duties in pool areas.

Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.

Qualifications

• Completion of a four year high school course
• Certified as an American Red Cross Lifeguard
• Current certification in American Red Cross standard First Aid and CPR-PR
• Working knowledge of water safety and modern lifesaving equipment, methods and techniques
• Ability to swim strongly and to enforce the rules and regulations relative to pool activities
• Ability to meet the public with courtesy and tact
• Pass a practical water test demonstrating lifeguard training techniques and a written / verbal test demonstrating a thorough knowledge of water safety and lifeguard responsibilities.
