Job Title: Community Engagement Manager

Reports To: Director of Community Engagement Government Relations 

FLSA Status: Exempt, Full-Time

Department: Development and External Affairs

Classification: M1 

Job Purpose

The Community Engagement Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, and overseeing activities that promote seniors' social, physical, and emotional well-being at various sites associated with Serving Seniors. This position is also responsible for managing the organization’s volunteer program and corporate and business relations, especially as it pertains to corporate volunteerism and other avenues for corporate engagement as outlined in the organization’s corporate partnerships program.

Established in 1970, Serving Seniors helps San Diego County’s low-income seniors overcome poverty through whole-person, wraparound support including meals, housing, health and social services, and enrichment activities. We work at numerous sites across the county and in the homes of hundreds of homebound seniors. Our flagship Gary & Mary West Senior Wellness Center in downtown San Diego is unlike any other senior center in the nation. Bringing together a range of supportive services under one roof, the Senior Wellness Center operates 365 days a year and offers two floors of integrated care, including health and social services, housing navigation, enrichment activities, lifelong learning, a Cyber Café and linkage to over 25 onsite direct service partners, including a senior dental center. Last fiscal year, we provided over 1,400,000 meals and coordinated services to 6,800 older adults.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Activities/Events

• Plans, organizes, and executes special events for volunteers and older adult activities.

• Supervises the Activities and Volunteer Coordinators as it pertains to all aspects of Activities program implementation.

• Oversees the monthly creation of activity calendars and schedules of upcoming activities.

• Establishes a formal process to assess the abilities and strengths/weaknesses of our activities programming.

• Ensures that activities and events are sensitive to the needs of clients (i.e., culturally, age-appropriate, contemporary, etc.).

• Evaluates the popularity and success of current activities and makes changes as appropriate.

• Ensures that staff/site managers are aware of all upcoming activities and events.

• Ensures that clients and the local senior community are aware of all upcoming activities and events.

• Creates written communications such as letters, flyers, and schedules as appropriate.

• Develops and manages incentives that generate senior client participation.

• Build and develop partnerships with social, civic, and local organizations to increase older adult activities and participation.

• Identifies community outreach opportunities and represents Serving Seniors at community outreach events and fairs as needed.

• Oversees the receiving, organizing, and distributing of in-kind donations for Serving Seniors’ clients.

• Oversees the activities database and other administrative tasks.

Volunteers

• Oversees the volunteer coordination, recruitment, placement, management, recognition, and retention of volunteers.

• Maintains and secures partnerships with community organizations to facilitate volunteer engagement.

• Oversees the maintenance of a volunteer database and administrative tasks.

Corporate Relations

· Manages the corporate partnerships – both existing and new partnerships.

· Ensures the optimum engagement and stewardship of corporate and business partnerships 

Required Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s degree 

Experience

• Minimum of 3 years related experience (hospitality, coordinating events, activities, and/or volunteers in either a non-profit, corporate, or public sector setting)

• 1 year of experience in supervising and managing employees and volunteers.

• Experience building community and corporate partnerships.

• Database management experience. 

• Program management experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and Google Drive (or other cloud-based platforms).

• Demonstrated ability to conduct oneself in a calm, professional, and tactful manner when dealing with the public and/or tenuous situations.

• Exemplary customer service.

• Effective time management. 

• Supervision and managerial skills: ability to effectively manage and delegate a wide array of tasks, projects, schedules, and responsibilities.

• Presentation Skills – the ability to create flyers, posters, and visual presentations.

• Cultural competency – demonstrated ability to have successful, positive interactions with diverse groups of people.

• Ability to work productively and independently in an unstructured environment with frequent interruptions.

• Effective oral and written communication skills.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Position is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 30 pounds. 
  • Requires specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 
  • Must maintain personal cell phone for work-related purposes. 
  • Must have reliable transportation available for work-related purposes, a valid California driver’s license, and proof of automobile insurance.
  • Requires the ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays as job duties may require.
