Progressive Art Studio Collective (PASC) Gallery Assistant

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: BFA or equivalent

Experience: At least one year's experience working in a retail or the service industry

Licensure: Valid Michigan Driver License

Approval of STEP’s Insurance Carrier

Ability to pass criminal background check

Status : Part time, Hourly, Non-Union, Non-Exempt

PRINCIPAL FUNCTION:

The Gallery Assistant is responsible for customer service and sales, explaining the exhibitions and the goals of the Progressive Arts Studio Collective (PASC) program to visitors, making art and product sales, using and maintaining the Shopify Point of Sale (POS) system, accepting payments and making change for customers in the gallery retail space. Packing sold artworks. Following up with visitors interested in purchasing artwork and preparing artwork dossiers. Helping to prepare press releases. Photographs artworks for online website and records. Keeping track of audience numbers. Supporting exhibition openings and events. Responsible for the overall appearance of the gallery and studio. And helping to support social media for the PASC gallery and studio.

The ideal candidate should have a background working in retail, great people skills, computer skills, social media/communication skills, a desire to make sales, and further the careers of artists with disabilities. They should have an interest in and knowledge of all forms of art making, classical, modern, contemporary art, and/or craft. And most importantly, they must exhibit the utmost respect for persons with disabilities, and be appreciative of art that does not fit conventional notions of artistic practice, such as self-taught, outsider/outlier art.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions:

· Stock and arrange merchandise.

· Greet customers, explain exhibition and goals of PASC program and STEP services.

· Helps set up for exhibition openings and events.

· Process business transactions, handle cash, process debit/credit cards.

· Accept payment and make change.

· Safely packs artwork for customers, and bag products.

· Answer customer questions concerning artworks and products.

· Ensures the appropriate control of cash, credit cards, POS system and financial information.

· Remove and record amount of cash in register at end of shift.

· Keep the gallery clean and orderly.

· Is familiar with and supports STEP’s mission and purpose.

· Tracks inventory and ensures it is handled, stored, and processed to minimize loss or damage.

· Responsible for interior and exterior gallery/studio appearance

· Completes opening and closing procedures. Tracks store access keys, security codes, employee identification badges

· Operates Point of Sale (POS) system

· Keeps track of visitor numbers and shares numbers with PASC staff

· Assists in the set-up of exhibitions and openings.

· Forwards all inquiries regarding artwork, artists or the PASC program to manager.

· Maintains gallery materials and equipment.

· Help to prepare artwork for exhibitions, including photographing and framing artwork.

Marginal Functions:

· Represents Services To Enhance Potential in the community and provide information regarding Services To Enhance Potential programs and services

· Attends staff and other meetings as assigned.

· Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the PASC Program Manager.

· Assists in writing bios or providing information about each PASC artist for press and exhibitions.

· Assists in writing press releases and other public facing documents.

· Maintain a personal vehicle for use in performing job duties.
