Serenity Family Care Personal Care Aide

Job Description:

The Personal Care Aide will assist the elderly, convalescents, or persons with disabilities with daily living activities in the care facility. Duties performed at Serenity Family Care Home may include keeping house (making beds, doing laundry, washing dishes) and preparing meals. The Personal Care Aide may advise families, the elderly, convalescents, and persons with disabilities on nutrition, cleanliness, and household activities. Family care home staff shall provide personal care to residents according to the residents' care plans and attend to any other personal care needs residents may be unable to attend to for themselves.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Administers bedside and personal care such as ambulation and personal hygiene assistance. Prepares and maintains records of client progress and services performed, reporting changes in client condition to manager or supervisor.
  • Performs housekeeping duties such as cooking, cleaning, washing clothes and dishes, and running errands. Cares for individuals and families during periods of incapacitation, family disruption, and convalescence; providing companionship, personal care, and help in adjusting to new lifestyles.
  • Performs health care-related tasks such as monitoring vital signs and medication under the direction of registered nurses, physiotherapists or supervising party.
  • Plans, shops for, and prepares nutritious meals, and assists families in planning, shopping for, or preparing nutritious meals.
  • Transports clients to locations outside the Family Care Home such as to physicians’ offices or on outings, using a motor vehicle.
  • Instructs or advises clients on issues such as household cleanliness, utilities, hygiene, nutrition, or infant care.
  • Participates in case reviews, consulting with the team caring for the client, to evaluate the clients’ needs and plan for continuing services.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Must possess a strong service orientation, including active listening, critical thinking skills, and close monitoring of clients.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • More than two years or experience preferred.
  • 80-hour personal care training and competency evaluation program established by the Department and completed within six months
  • Participate in quarterly evaluation by licensed personnel to ensure continued competency
  • Medication aide certification is highly preferred

· PCAs and their direct supervisors shall complete training, clinical skills validation, and pass the written examination

· PCAs and their direct supervisors shall complete necessary continuing education and document appropriately

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

· have a signed job description that reflects the position's duties, and responsibilities and is signed by the administrator and the employee

· be able to implement all of the family care home's accident, fire safety, and emergency procedures for the protection of the residents

· be informed of the confidential nature of resident information and shall protect and preserve the information from unauthorized use and disclosure

· not hinder or interfere with the exercise of the rights guaranteed under the Declaration of Residents' Rights

· have no findings listed on the North Carolina Health Care Personnel Registry

· have documented annual immunization against influenza virus and exceptions as provided in the law shall be documented in the staff person's personnel record

· have a criminal background check completed and results available in the staff person's personnel file

· have an examination and screening for the presence of controlled substances completed and results available in the staff person's personnel file;

· maintain a current driver's license if responsible for transportation of residents

· be willing to cooperate with state and local inspectors when determining and maintaining compliance

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of standing, bending and lifting.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.

Additional Requirements:

· Dress appropriately in scrubs with professional appearance

· Nails kept at modest length to prevent contamination of food and spread of infection

· Closed toed shoes are mandatory due to physical requirements

· Limit excessive jewelry due to potential of harming resident’s skin during one on one contact

· Provide 1-month notice of vacation plans to administrator for proper coverage of shifts.

· Ensure required shifts are covered if vacation or sick days are needed

· Always treat residents and their families with the upmost respect and care
