Job Title: Principal Scientist

Department: R&D

Reports to: Sr. Director of Beverage

Status: Exempt (Salary)

Schedule: Full Time (Over 30 hours per week)

Shift: Office (8:00 am to 5:00 pm)

JOB SUMMARY:

The Principal Low Acid Scientist is responsible for providing technical support to customers and internal teams for formulation solutions and application directions. The Principal Low Acid Scientist will be recognized internally as a subject matter expert (SME) in commercialization of all RTD beverage products (low and high acid) and will yield expertise in other areas as needed. Principal Low Acid Scientist will work onsite at the facility in SLC, Utah.

MAIN JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop, make, and evaluate finished product applications to support new product development efforts.
  • Coordinate and execute new product scale-ups for manufacturing.
  • Hands-on work ethic in solving technical issues, bench work required.
  • Work closely with Sales/Marketing and cross-functional teams on commercializing innovations in formulations and ingredients and effectively communicating about customer projects.
  • Will lead the commercialization of pilot plant and safely operate lab and pilot plant equipment related to UHT processing, carbonated beverages, spray drying, dry blending, and other areas as assigned.
  • Develop and lead creative initiatives, successfully manage projects, and be recognized as a SME/technical liaison between internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identifies potential problems early in the development process and addresses them with appropriate solutions.
  • Will oversee the set-up, design, and implementation of best lab practices.
  • Actively train direct reports and other team members in all aspects of beverage development and commercialization.
  • Assist in hiring and building out beverage innovation team.
  • Works with Supply Chain to source raw materials needed for the success of product development.
  • May work with customers and co-packers to conduct pilot batches and scaled up product runs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

MS in Food Science or related field.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 10 years commercial experience in a variety of low acid beverage categories. Required experience in emerging categories such as coffees, plant protein drinks, functional beverages, dairy based drinks, etc.

Experience in flavor technology preferred.

Experience in setting up a pilot plant preferred.

Basic mathematical skills. Able to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Able to compute ratios and percentages.

Demonstrates ability to self-manage. Consistently at work and on time. Takes responsibility for own actions, takes initiatives, meets productivity standards, and generates suggestions for improving work.

WORK ENVIRONEMENT:

This position works in an office and laboratory environment. Exposure to fumes, dust, or other airborne particles. Working near moving mechanical parts.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires frequent sitting, use of hands, talking, hearing/listening, tasting/smelling, standing, walking, bending/stooping, climbing stairs/ladders, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $90,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
