Position Overview

Responsible for the provision of acupuncture and Chinese medicine focusing on restoring health, promoting wellness and providing preventative health care for patients at SVT Health and Wellness.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial and follow-up patient consultations documenting health history in electronic health record (EHR) including current symptoms, diet, lifestyle, and physical and emotional health.
  • Conduct and document relevant examiniation(s) for treatment.
  • Make diagnoses and determine treatment strategies.
  • Explain procedures to patients and prepare them for treatment.
  • Identify precise locations on a patient’s body where needles should be inserted, or where electrical or heat stimulation is to be applied.
  • Utilize therapeutic techniques such as acupuncture, tuina or shiatsu acupressure massage, cupping, moxibustion, Acutonics and/or Shonishin as needed.
  • Following the treatment procedure, consult with the patient about other therapy, diet, exercise, and emotional health recommendations.
  • Suggest treatments involving herbal medicine as needed.
  • Evaluate treatment outcomes and create a plan of care in collaboration with the patient.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and chart notes in EHR.
  • Comply with quality, safety, and infection-prevention protocols, as well as all federal and state regulations.
  • Follow all Acupuncture (L.Ac.) and Chinese medicine (Dipl. OM) licensing criteria and regulations.
  • Work cooperatively with medical colleagues and administrative staff, refer patients for other services as needed
  • Maintain Continuing Education requirements as defined by state license criteria and national board certification, read trade journals, and keep up-to-date on industry practices and regulations.
  • Develop and deliver educational programs and handouts to enhance patient care and preventative medicine.
  • Participate in developing systems of delivery to assure efficient and comprehensive patient care and strengthen a team approach.
  • Promote communication and program development by participating in clinic and applicable local health service meetings.
  • Function as a patient advocate; conduct follow up care and coordinate care with other health care providers and make appropriate referrals for patient continuity of care.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality for all clients and their families and their SVT Health and Wellness patient information.
  • Protect the security of all patient medical records to ensure that confidentiality is maintained following HIPAA I regulations as outlined in SVTHW policy and procedures.
  • Follow federal, state and local legal guidelines to include but not limited to: HIPAA, CLIA, OSHA, and ICWA.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or work equivalent required, in a related field. Master’s Degree from accredited Chinese Medicine Program

2 years additional experience in a related field

Current State of Alaska Acupuncture license (L.Ac)

Current NCCAOM Board Certification

Preferred Qualifications

Must be a team player/have ability to work in a team environment.

Timely, sensitive and clear communication is essential to the success of this position. Must possess ability to constantly and politely communicate verbally and in written form, with people of varying backgrounds and cultures.

Reliability – regular, consistent and on-time attendance is important to the success of this position.

Ability to both accept and follow direction from others, as well as self-motivate when necessary.

Excellent people skills a must – customer service skills such as patience, attentiveness, ability to “read” patients, a calming presence, and ability to handle difficult situations are all essential to the success of this position.

Proficiency in Mac and PC systems. Proficient to advanced operational knowledge of a computer, keyboard, and other office equipment. Must be familiar with Microsoft Excel and word processing, and database programs. Practice Management Software and Electronic Health Record experience a plus.

Travel Requirements

Travel is subject to weather conditions and unplanned overnights in locations may be required.

Day travel from Homer to Anchor Point or Seldovia approximately four times a month. Travel to Seldovia requires the ability to fly in small aircrafts or ride on small to large boats.
