TITLE: Middle School 6-8 General Music/Band Teacher

TYPE OF POSITION: Full-time (1.0); 2024-2025 school year; salary commensurate with experience and education, as set forth in the agreement between the Seekonk School Department and the Seekonk Educators Association

LOCATION: Dr. Kevin M. Hurley Middle School

AREA OF CONSIDERATION: All qualified candidates

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

The Middle School General Music/Band Teacher provides learning experiences in Music, guided by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and district standards and requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered qualified for this position, candidates must minimally have the following:

  1. Licensed, or eligible for licensure in Music: Vocal/Instrumental/General by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as well as evidence of meeting all Massachusetts Department of Education standards for Highly Qualified Teacher.
  2. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with children and adults.
  3. Commitment to remain current in content knowledge and teaching strategies.
  4. Ability to relate well with students, colleagues, parents, and staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS which include but are not limited to:

  1. Develop and implement music and band education curriculum that is aligned with school district goals and state standards. 
  2. Develop a balanced music program and lessons that incorporates appropriate instructional and practice time for students. 
  3. Present a variety of types of music from diverse cultural, linguistic, and historical sources and perspectives that aligns with the district’s values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. 
  4. Coordinate, plan, rehearse, and direct students in musical performances and programs.
  5. Collaborate with music and performing arts teachers across the district to realize a shared vision for band and the performing arts. 
  6. Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect accommodation and regulatory compliance regarding the individual needs of students with IEPs or 504 Plans.
  7. Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives and methods according to the MA Curriculum Frameworks.
  8. Use appropriate technologies in the teaching/learning process.
  9. Use formative and summative assessment to inform instruction and improve student achievement.
  10. Present a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school.
  11. Create a classroom environment that is respectful, challenging and responsive to diverse student needs including the physical, social and emotional development of all students.
  12. Demonstrate sound behavior management practices within the classroom and administer discipline according to school department policies and administrative regulations.
  13. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  14. Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents and community members.
  15. Provide direction for and monitor the activities of a Teaching Assistant (Paraprofessional), if one is assigned to the classroom.
  16. Other duties, as assigned according to the SEA contract.
