Position Overview

The Math Intervention Specialist will provide targeted support to the needs of students in the area of mathematics and support teachersin the implementation of effective math instruction.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

• Use data to identify students in need of mathematic interventions
• Provide supplemental instruction to struggling math students in the form of individual or small-group intervention
• Collect and analyze data to evaluate and further develop action plans in response to determined student math needs
• Continuously monitor the progress of students, both formally and informally, in order to adjust instruction and student grouping
• Maintain frequent communication with school administrators regarding data on student math growth
• Provide resources, organize and lead professional development workshops, and offer ongoing training to school staff on evidence-based mathematical practices
• Use scaffolding techniques to improve students’ math skills as well as assist teachers in becoming comfortable in implementing evidence-based instructional practices
• Coordinate and help administer the various math screening, progress monitoring, and diagnostic assessments
• Assist in the analysis of school-wide mathematical strengths and weaknesses and formulate plans to improve student achievement in math and teacher effectiveness
• Serve as a resource to content area teachers in identifying mathematical needs, adapting instructional techniques, and selecting appropriate materials for their disciplines
• Promote interest in math by initiating and coordinating math incentive programs
• Keep abreast of developments, research, and new technology in the field
• Perform any other related duties as assigned by the school principal or other appropriate administrators;
• In collaboration with the classroom teacher, provide assistance as requested, such as: participate in parent conferences, answer parent concerns in formal and informal settings to encourage support for their child’s math development, serve as a resource to promote parental support of the math intervention goals
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mathematics, education, or related field (required), Master's Degree (preferred)
• 3 years of elementary/secondary urban classroom experience
• 2 years as a mathematical specialist, coach, or related position
• Experience working with incarcerated or opportunity youth (preferred)
• Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies

Site Description

The Maya Angelou Academy at New Beginnings is a long-term juvenile facility in Laurel, MD. It serves youth ages 13-21 and is located inside New Beginnings Youth Development Center. Our students develop the academic, social, and employment skills they need to build rewarding lives and promote positive change.

Our mission at the Maya Angelou Academy is to provide a safe, nurturing, and mutually respectful environment that motivates and prepares each student to fulfill their academic or career potential.
