PT Wild Encounter Coordinator
Job Summary
Greets guests and interfaces with animal care staff during Wild Encounter experiences.
Primary Job Functions (list three with specific tasks listed)
Host Wild Encounter Experiences
  • Complete and submit all necessary paperwork for each encounter.
  • Greet Wild Encounter guests and clearly explain expectations.
  • Actively communicate with animal care staff as needed to ensure safe, positive experience.
  • Understand and follow each animal area’s Standard Operating Procedures for Wild Encounters.
  • Update and maintain interpretive Standard Operating Procedures for Wild Encounters.
Facilitate Interpretive Programs
  • Facilitate approved interpretive programs throughout the Zoo when not hosting Wild Encounter Experiences and submit paperwork for proper documentation.
  • Facilitate education programs during peak season, including, but not limited to STEM Safari programs, Investigation Stations, stations at special events and animal days celebrations.
  • Assist in the promotion of Wild Encounters throughout the Zoo.
  • Keep area tour information and animal names lists current.
Guest Experience
  • Provide quality guest experiences throughout the Zoo by providing hands-on activities, interpretations, and demonstrations.
  • Interact with guests to encourage positive animal encounters and nature play activities.
  • Correct undesirable behaviors with positive techniques.
  • Speak to a variety of ages, learning levels, and abilities.
  • Adjust techniques and methods as needed to be most effective.
  • Highlight conservation work/programs and conservation value of breeds and species throughout the Zoo.
  • Assist in training and mentoring new staff and volunteers.
  • Assist in the evaluation of programs as directed.
  • Demonstrate compassion, consistency and fairness, cultural awareness and sensitivity, flexibility, and respectfulness.
  • Demonstrate passion for wildlife conservation and conservation education.
  • Exhibit enthusiasm, creative thinking and foster a sense of wonder and responsibility for the earth and children.
Secondary Job Functions (list no more than five)
  • Animal handling.
  • Assist with interpretive areas by providing interpretation, or maintaining supplies/equipment.
  • Participate in a variety of professional development activities.
  • Serve other roles within the education department.
  • Represent the Zoo and/or Sedgwick County at various offsite events such as regional, national, and international conferences, meetings, community events, outreach programs, etc.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Interpretive, public speaking, or informal education experience.
  • 18 years in age.
  • Valid US driver’s license without restrictions.
  • Must be available to work weekends and some evenings.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associates degree and/or Interpretive certification.
  • Previous experience working with the public in a formal or informal learning setting (i.e. zoo, aquarium, museum, science center or classroom.)
Working Environment/Conditions
The employee is subject to activities that occur in both inside and outside environmental conditions. The employee is subject to any potential hazards of working in a zoo. The employee is subject to potential hazards of working with and near dangerous animals. The employee may be exposed to zoonotic diseases. Employee must be able to work a schedule that may involve working weekends, holidays, or after regular work shifts.
Physical requirements
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. May be required to walk or stand for extended periods of time and do repetitive tasks with few breaks within indoor and outdoor environments. The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or animals.
