Seattle Public Schools is Hiring a Volunteer Coach Near Multiple Sites, WA

Responsibilities include coaching the designated sport under the direction of the Head Coach; assisting with the Varsity team; and coaching the 2nd and/or 3rd team including providing guidance, instruction and experience to enhance students' personal, physical and social growth and development. This position may be held in addition to a classroom teaching or other work assignment.Position reports to:School Athletic DirectorSchool Athletic AdministratorSchool PrincipalTo apply for this position, please follow these steps:
  1. Submit your application with an attachment of your valid CPR and First Aid certificates from either Red Cross or American Heart Association. If you do not have your CPR and/or First Aid certificates attached, you must obtain certification within one (1) month of your Volunteer Athletics Coach online application submittal date. Email your certificate(s) to athletics@seattleschools.org. In your message, request to attach the material(s) to your Volunteer Athletics Coach application.
  2. You must schedule a fingerprints appointment within the two (2) weeks from the date you submitted your Volunteer Athletic Coach online application through this weblink. (Drop-in visits are not allowed.)  On the drop down box, select "Finger Printing" and follow the directions on the screen.
    Please enter the following information in the corresponding fields:
    Work Location: School(s) in which you plan to coach
    Job Title: Volunteer Athletics Coach
    Reporting Manager Name: Name of Athletic Director or Athletic Coordinator at the school(s) you will coach
    Once you successfully book your fingerprints appointment, you will receive a confirmation message.
    On the day of your appointment, you must bring government-issued photo identification and payment. Check with the HR front desk for cost and payment information by calling 206-252-0215.
Please note:
  1. You will receive notification of your Volunteer Athletics Coach clearance when your CPR and First Aid certifications have been approved by Athletics and your fingerprint and background check have been verified by Human Resources.
  2. If you do not complete your fingerprints and/or your certification within their respective windows, then you will need to reapply and go through the entire process.
  3. If you are unsure how to use the Seattle Public Schools application system, please visit this link for instructions.
  4. If you are applying with the expectation of being a paid hourly coach at your school, you will need to fill out additional paperwork at your school site. Please see your Athletic Director/Coordinator.
  • Prepares student athletes mentally and physically for athletic competition.
  • Enhances student athlete's personal, physical and social growth and development in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Plans and supervises scheduled workouts and games for assigned team.
  • Instructs participants in the skills and techniques of the position played in the sport.
  • Keeps abreast of current sport knowledge and coaching techniques in designated sport by attending clinics and reviewing related literature.
  • Maintains current knowledge of WIAA and Metro/KingCo League rules, regulations and league by-laws.
  • Attends Varsity contests as requested and provides support for the Head Coach in decision making and management of assigned sports events.
  • Assists the Head Coach in management of District-owned equipment, maintenance of records, issuing athletic awards and other functions associated with promotion and management of the designated sport program.
  • Attends meetings and clinics as required by the Athletic Department, including attending the League pre-season coaches meeting and annual WIAA sponsored rule clinics as they apply to the particular.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Minimum of one year of coaching and/or participation in the designated sport
  • Successful completion of WIAA Coaches Requirements
  • Must be a high school graduate or have completed a GED program
  • For assistant or volunteer coach, must be at least 19 years of age. For head coach, must be at least 21 years of age.
Continuing Education/Training:
Valid "hands on" First Aid and CPR Certification, which includes the following:
  • First Aid class must be taken from either Red Cross or American Heart Association. Attending an in-person class is highly encouraged. If the first aid class is not available in your area prior to your season, the only available online course is through this website.
  • CPR class must be done in person and taken from either Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • All coaches must attend Seattle Public Schools Adult Sexual Misconduct Prevention Training. You may view the schedule through this weblink.
    Clearances:
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications (Red Cross or American Heart Association)
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint and Background Clearance
    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    Knowledge of:
    Basic rules, strategies, coaching techniques and skills of the designated sport; effective behavior management techniques, team dynamics and group learning.
    Skills in:
    Coaching and motivating athletes; effective communication, organizing activities and giving instructions;
    Ability to:
    Relate to students, staff, administration and the public in a multi-ethnic environment; to be fair and consistent when working with students; to maintain accurate records and supervise fund-raising activities.
    Working Conditions:
    Requires stamina and endurance; requires physical exertion associated with demonstrating techniques; required to travel between sites.
