Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The Senior Accountant is responsible for working with over $13 million in annual revenue from multiple sources. This role reports to the Director of Finance and requires excellent analytical skills with a thorough knowledge of accounting principles to ensure the department creates accurate and timely financial reports and records for the organization. They must ensure accuracy and effectiveness in all the accounting tasks and interacting with internal departments heads while providing oversight of professional accounting staff, all with an emphasis on providing excellent customer service. Monthly activities include revenue and expense recognition, billing and cash receipts from donors. The Senior Accountant will also assist in other general accounting activities including general ledger reconciliations, support of the annual audit process, and other duties as assigned.

KEY OR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Senior Accountant will provide input and assist in the organization of finance and accounting functions across the department and agencywide. Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.

Accounts Receivable & General Ledger Accounting

  • Perform monthly review of income from various sub-ledger systems.
  • Lead period end closing process, prepare journal entries, assist in financials statement preparation, and complete audit requests, as assigned.
  • Work with business owners across departments to reconcile the accounting database.
  • Analyze accounting records, including financial statements and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to standards defined within the department.
  • Work with the Director of Finance on appropriate fiscal strategies for the agency.
  • Review records of accounts to ensure accuracy.
  • Support annual audit.
  • Support annual budgeting process.
  • Reconcile sub-ledgers and posts entries to the general ledger for intercompany, prepaid, fixed asset, and restricted fund balances.
  • With Director of Finance, responsible for the administration of NetSuite.

Cash

  • Reconcile cash accounts, as assigned.
  • Review and record online banking activity.

Leadership

  • Liaise with the Director of Finance to improve financial procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP.
  • Plan, assign, and review accounting staff work.
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Provide input into department’s goal setting process.
  • Fosters a welcoming environment and encourages positive working relationships and interactions
  • Supports and advocates for the mission, vision, and goals of the Finance team and Seattle Humane.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities in a timely and effective manner in accordance with established company policies to achieve the overall objectives of this position.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

Supervisory responsibility:

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Directly supervises up to three employees and is responsible employee recruitment, development, managing performance and employee relations.
  • Supervises operations and workflow within dept including planning, assigning, and directing work; invoicing and revenue recognition, posting or cash receipt, wire notices, and bank statements to the accounting system.

Communication/interpersonal contact:

  • Daily verbal and written communication with co-workers through meetings, direct con­tact, tele­phone, memos or mail.
  • Occasional communication with Seattle Humane clients and/or donors by telephone or mail.
  • Occasional communication with vendors, lenders, agents from contracting agencies, or veterinarians by telephone or mail.

Complexity:

  • Recurring duties on a daily basis with diverse work during specific times of the year. Medium degree of formal policies and procedures exist to guide the work. Must be able to coordinate several tasks within a day and utilize a high degree of independent judgment to accomplish work as­signments or requests.

Qualifications


KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

    • A minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience and knowledge with general accounting or government funded non-profit accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
    • Demonstrates high proficiency with NetSuite and capable of training and coaching system to others.
    • Advanced skills functioning in MS Suite, including O365, SharePoint, Teams environments.
    • Can manage multiple projects with competing priorities with the ability to respond to change in a productive manner.
    • Shows excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Demonstrates accuracy and attention to detail in work product.
    • Experience following, analyze, building, and administer agency policies and procedures.
    • Demonstrates excellent written and oral communication skills.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field, required.
    • CPA designation and/or master’s degree in related field, desired.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position frequently analyzes problems and determine the best solutions, creates accurate and timely reports without error, communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, works on tasks and projects independently as well as with a team. Makes decisions under time constraints with (sometimes) limited information. Has attention to detail and concentrates to produce accurate work despite frequent interruptions. Needs to be sensitive to other opinions, perspectives or cultures. Can deal with conflict, disagreement, or emotional people with tact and compassion. Could sit for long periods of time performing work on a computer, lift and carry at least 30 pounds, could kneel, crouch, bend and reach. Exhibits initiative and motivation in performing duties.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

General open office environment to include prolong sitting and working viewing a computer screen. Potential hazards are exposure to eye strain and/or back strain. If handling animals there is a potential of animal bites, exposure to zoonotic diseases (diseases that can be transmitted from vertebrate animals to people), animal dander and noise.

  • Equipment Used: Copiers, multi-lined telephone, video or camera equipment, personal computer and printers.
  • Work Hours: Full-time exempt position, hybrid working environment available with minimum two days in office.
