The Campus Safety and Security personnel at North Seattle College are highly trained and well-educated with essential skills to tackle any type of situation.

NSC Campus Safety and Security Officers (aka CSOs) are uniformed professionals who maintain the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors at NSC. Under the supervision of the Director of Campus Safety and Security, these officers perform patrols by foot and with vehicles to monitor the behavior of all on the campus while maintaining order to prevent disturbances. They must ensure the physical safety of all sixty (60) acres of NSC campus buildings and property. They lock and unlock doors and actively patrol and engage with the community. CSOs also provide first aid while alerting appropriate emergency personnel when responding to any emergencies.

What you will be working on:- Patrol a designated area on foot and in a patrol car to enforce institution rules and regulations, local, state, and federal statutes and ordinances;
- Participate in emergency preparedness drills and training
- Inspect buildings and grounds for prowlers, fire, property damage, or other irregularities;
- Use exceptional customer service skills in all interactions with students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the campus.
- Direct and regulate traffic, investigate accidents or crimes; administer first aid; issue citations for violations; gather evidence; locate witnesses; appear in court as required;
- Conduct parking enforcement on regular bases.
- Operate department communication equipment; answer telephone inquiries; receive reports of criminal activity; dispatch foot and mobile units; operate paging system; monitor alarm systems; prepare, type, and distribute reports;
- Respond to request for first aid and support. Assess the situation and provide first aid support.
- Maintain surveillance of an area suspect for criminal activity;
- Assist in providing emergency notifications to staff, faculty, and students
- Assist city or county police and state patrol in cases of emergency;
- Lock and unlock campus facilities. Maintain lock and unlock schedule. Activate and deactivate intrusion detection systems. Write complex reports documenting actions and maintain accurate records.
- Perform related duties as required.
What you bring as a candidate:(Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)
- High School graduation or equivalent; possession of a valid driver's license; no previous felony convictions; AND two years of full-time college in police science or allied field; OR Two years of police or security experience or equivalent experience.
- Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods and to maneuver uneven surfaces, including stairs, without assistance.
- Knowledge of rules governing access to buildings and grounds; rules of behavior; general safety precautions and fire hazards; methods and procedures in dealing with clients, visitors, and staff; methods and procedures for searching for escapees and violators; firefighting equipment and fire prevention methods; first aid; report preparation and writing; verbal communication skills; observation skills; law enforcement basics; investigation procedures; electronic security systems; emergency operations.
- Demonstrate honesty and integrity, interpersonal skills, and communicating effectively with a diverse campus community, especially when individuals are agitated or involved in volatile situations; strong listening and cognitive skills; excellent verbal and written communications skills; being courteous, polite and approachable; surveillance and observation, recalling and recording these observations
- Ability to: learn rules and enforce them; follow written and oral instructions; make sound judgments and decisions; be objective and fair; be alert at all times; meet emergencies and employ effective courses of action; write reports; investigate incidents and obtain pertinent information; observe and detect suspicious situations; communicate calmly and effectively with agitated individuals, using de-escalating techniques; communicate with staff, residents and the public; apply first aid; operate electronic security equipment; use firefighting equipment, function in various positions during emergency operations.
Physical Requirements:Ability to perform a range of physical motions, exerting up to 50 pounds; lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; and traversing up and down stairs.
