This is a nine-month, full-time faculty position with a base salary of $84,376 during the regular academic year; teaching of EMT coursework as needed qualifies this position for an additional high-demand premium of 20% on per EMT course taught in addition to this base. Additional compensation is available for agreed upon faculty program coordination; and moonlight assignments during the regular academic year and summer quarter (either instructional or through re-assigned time projects).

This position is typically scheduled to work Monday through Friday 8:00AM to 5:00PM. The schedule may vary depending on program needs. May be required to work evenings and weekends as needed.


This position is
governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between The American Federation of Teachers (Seattle Community Colleges Local 1789) and Seattle Colleges District VI.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Dean of Workforce Instruction, the full-time, tenure track faculty for Emergency Medical Technician and Fire Science programs will be responsible for teaching Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Fire Science courses at North Seattle College. In addition to teaching duties, they will assume a leadership role in development of inclusive, equity-minded curriculum and program pathways for both programs. This lead faculty will also serve as the lead faculty program coordinator (FPC) for both programs. The faculty will build and sustain relationships with internal partners across the College and the Seattle Colleges District, as well as with external partners in community and industry, to eliminate equity gaps for students seeking careers in EMT and/or the Fire Service. This full-time, tenure-track faculty will join a group of passionate educators who proudly embrace our mission of Changing Lives through Education, both in and beyond the classroom. The EMT program at North Seattle College has been in operation since 1977 and is the oldest program of its kind within King County.

What you will be working on:

  • Teaches a full-time teaching courseload consisting of EMT and/or Fire Science classes
  • Provides teaching through in-person, hybrid, synchronous online and/or asynchronous online delivery of instruction; provides evening and weekend instruction as necessary
  • Professional obligations as outlined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement, including holding regularly scheduled office hours and providing informal advising to prospective and current students regarding EMT and Fire Science programs
  • As lead faculty, develops and implements academic plan for EMT classes each quarter; this includes submitting plan to county to obtain state approval; coordination of information sessions and administration of testing; assistance with course preparation and coordination of co-teaching schedules, ensuring adequacy of learning spaces
  • As lead faculty, provides coordination of off-stie learning
  • Provides collaborative leadership with administrators, faculty and instructional assistants in EMT and Fire Science programs in maintaining rigor of curriculum and promoting excellence in instruction
  • Provides innovative thinking and leadership for increasing access and removing barriers for students in pursuit of their education in EMT and Fire Science; this includes exploration of scholarships, bridging opportunities for employment, and collaboration with employer partners
  • Assists in connecting students in program areas to campus resources
  • Assists Dean in coordination of schedules with required instructional staff that meets Washington State DOH, King County EMS and Seattle College requirements
  • Must maintain required Senior EMS Instruction (SEI) credentialing as required by Washington State Department of Health to administer instruction in an EMT program (per WAC 246-976-031 and WAC 246-976-023)

What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)

  • Must possess and have actively maintained Senior EMS Instructor (SEI) credential, as required by Washington State Department of Health to administer instruction in an EMT program (per WAC 246-976-031 and WAC 246-976-023
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience in EMS or Fire Service job assignments
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in coordination and leadership of a large professional team (more than 10 people)
  • Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience with adult learners
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience with advancing equity, diversity and inclusion in EMT, Fire Science and/or health-related fields, especially among underrepresented/underserved populations and marginalized identities, and among students who possess a wide range of academic abilities and interests
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a health- or education-related field OR equivalent professional experience in health-related field
  • Familiarity with Fire Science training curricula, which includes connections to relevant industry stakeholders that inform curriculum and creation of pathways to employment to regional fire departments in Washington
  • Knowledge of academic standards and policies that serve students within a higher education setting; including adult learning models (as opposed to training academy models), use of Learning Management Systems (LMS), curriculum and course development, accommodations and other student assistance procedures, FERPA, etc.
  • Experience and proficiency in communication with multiple stakeholders in a community, non-profit or educational setting
