Science & Technology Recruitment is Hiring a Sheet Metal Technician Near Hampton, VA

Science and Technology Corporation (STC) is seeking a full time Sheet Metal Technician in the Manufacturing Applications Branch (MAB) at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). We are in search of a highly skilled and motivated individual to perform a role in sheet metal fabrication. This role is versatile, covering all facets of metals fabrication to include sheet metal and heavy metal fabrication, mechanical connections, and space flight assembly practices. If you enjoy manufacturing one-of-a-kind hardware, working to tight tolerances, strong focus on quality, extreme attention to detail, you are likely the candidate we are looking for.

Responsibilities:
Fabricator will support the daily operations of the Metals Applications Branch and other areas as required, will assure that all equipment is well maintained and in working order, stay abreast of new technologies in the field of metals fabrication and maintain a state-of-the-art capability. Candidate will have the opportunity to interface directly with engineers and researchers to better understand project deliverables. Candidate should be well organized to meet all work requirements and follow NASA procedures. All tools will be provided so no need to bring your own. You will work with support services such as machine shop, waterjet, weld shop, and composites group to ensure your success.

  • Minimum of 7 years related experience and a high degree of understanding engineered fabrication drawings (blueprint reading/interpreting).
  • Extensive knowledge and experience utilizing hand tools, measuring instruments (dial/digital calipers, mics, etc.), and able to drill precision holes to meet engineered tolerances (.005” - .030” tolerances are normal).
  • Conventional and specialized forming processes of metals and their alloys in various sheet, plate, and structural forms.
  • Metal shaping tooling such as grinders, hand files, and sandpaper.
  • Fastening metal components utilizing certified aircraft and commercial fasteners (i.e.bolts, nuts, screws, rivets, Jo-bolts, Heli-Coils, Cherry fasteners, etc.).
  • Experience with operating metals fabrication equipment such as hydraulic press brake, plate roller, and metal shear.
  • Proficient with safe operation of equipment such as forklifts, overhead cranes, and oscillating boom lifts.
  • Individual must also work well with others and require minimal supervision while performing metals fabrication.
  • Possess good communication skills both oral and written.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid VA driver’s license with ability to drive company vehicles.
  • Technician will assist with planning, scheduling, cost estimate and performance of metals fabrication in support of research projects.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Well acquainted with current technology to include Microsoft Office, email services, and general computer operations.
  • The ability to pass a criminal and NASA background investigation.

Helpful Skills:

  • Current/In-process A&P license
  • Experience with project estimation

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
