POSITION: ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF SUSTAINABILITY & ENERGY MANAGEMENT

DEPARTMENT: Office of the President

REPORTS TO: Director, Capital Projects

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF SUSTAINABILITY will lead the campus energy management program to support and advance the School of Visual Art’s (SVA) sustainability efforts. The Assistant Director will evaluate, optimize and manage heating, cooling and water consumption across a portfolio of 1M square feet in 18 buildings. The Associate Director manages the campus energy dashboard and works collaboratively with capital and facilities staff to identify and implement best practices for efficient building equipment operation, develop projects to incorporate into the capital plan, develop energy management programs, and train staff to make best use of energy, water, and utility management tools. This position is in-person four days per week with one day remote.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and maintain a system of consistent, efficient, and reliable energy management.
  • Oversee energy studies and coordinate energy projects, including cost-saving initiatives, efficiency projects, and conservation programs.
  • Partner with Facilities staff to establish and implement a comprehensive energy reduction plan that aligns with existing facilities and renewal plans.
  • Manage project delivery process. Develop scope, schedule and budget, coordination of shutdowns, tie-ins and contractor access, regular site vists, through close-out and final payment activities. Ensure compliance with quantitative cost and schedule targets, and achievement of quality and site safety.
  • Work with consultants to develop controls improvements, design specifications, and adoption of standards and protocols for energy management systems and recommend facilities improvements.
  • Develop long-term capital plan to meet regulatory goals economically and effectively including LL84 (Benchmarking), LL87 (Retro-Commissioning), LL95 (Energy Efficiency Grades), and LL97 (Climate Mobilization Act), and SVA energy initiatives, such as electrical demand response, mandated energy usage reporting and the Mayor's Challenge Program.
  • Recommend and develop short and long-range plans for implementing energy innovations.
  • Coordinate with Facilities to develop projects, and staff training, that increase the control, efficiency and operational flexibility of BMS across the campus. Develop weekly reporting with vendor.
  • Identify cost-savings opportunities including grants, incentives, rebates, tax benefits and financing.
  • Coordinate Campus Energy Dashboard building integration. Manage building energy and utility data and communicate to occupants to educate, impact behaviors, and reduce energy consumption.
  • Manage data for energy performance metrics including: historic use, monthly use, annual usage, and EUI comparison calculations to support and track energy use, carbon emissions, and related metrics.
  • Create and maintain strategic relationships with key utilities and energy reporting vendors. Manage the Accounts Receivable process for utility bill purchase orders and tracks payments from input to closing.
  • Fulfill project reporting requirements with NYSERDA’s On-Site Energy Manager Program
  • Establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with all stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors' degree or higher, from an accredited institution in Engineering or equivalent.
  • Five years professional experience with energy management and related capital projects, and an understanding of how to drive energy optimization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory requirements including LL84 (Benchmarking), LL87 (Retro-Commissioning), LL95 (Energy Efficiency Grades), and LL97 (Climate Mobilization Act).
  • Working familiarity with local incentive programs including Con Edison and NYSERDA
  • Strong data management and analysis skills; proficiency with Google Apps, Microsoft Office, GRITS, with Procore and Brightly preferred. Ability to quickly navigate new energy management systems.
  • Possess passion for the subject matter, and consistent improvement and optimization of SVA's practices.
  • Familiarity with construction documents, and understanding of construction trades and work, with ability to level and compare bid submissions.
  • High level of organizational, interpersonal, & written and verbal communication skills. The ability to troubleshoot, problem solve, and remain calm in high-pressure situations.
  • Self-starting attitude with proven ability to work independently and effectively within time constraints, and on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with stakeholders in facilities, design, construction, academia and government.
  • Willingness and ability to perform periodic inspections of site conditions and project progress, including climbing stairs and ladders, accessing roofs, mechanical and electrical rooms. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and work in tight spaces.
  • Ability to occasionally work outside of normal office hours, work evenings and/or weekends

PREFERRED:

  • Certified Energy Manager/LEED AP or other relevant accreditation/certification
  • PE Accreditation
  • Higher Education facilities management experience.
  • Experience in educating individuals and groups about new concepts and resources.
