Summary:
The Middle School Dean of Students is a critical position that plays a central role in creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment for our students. We are seeking a candidate with a counseling mindset who is passionate about working with middle schoolers to help them navigate the challenges of adolescence. In this role, the Dean of Students will be responsible for creating and implementing programs that promote social-emotional learning, building positive relationships with students and families, and helping students develop the skills they need to succeed academically and personally. The Middle School Dean of Students will work closely with counselors, teachers, administrators, and other staff members to create a positive and inclusive school culture that supports the academic, social, and emotional growth of our students. Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates the Scheck Hillel values both implicitly and explicitly: Kavod (respect), Emet (truth), Chessed (kindness), Shalom (peace) and Ruach (spirit)
    • Serves as a positive role model for students and faculty
    • Creates a positive rapport with students and faculty
    • Sets the tone for appropriate school culture
    • Oversees student discipline and attendance and maintains accurate records
    • Develops and leads proactive programs to improve student behaviors, culture and interactions
    • Organizes student achievement recognition programs
    • Partners with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction to coach faculty on how to manage behaviors through high quality instruction, strong relationships, clear expectations and positive classroom cultures
    • Takes precautions to ensure staff/student safety. Monitors student behaviors that may indicate a problem (e.g., profanity, teasing, bullying, distress, etc.)
    • Facilitates meetings to address discipline concerns
    • Counsels students when necessary
  • Keeps the Division Directors and Counselors fully informed on student issues and all other relevant matters pertaining to school life
  • Participates in professional growth opportunities as appropriate
  • Schedules and administers midterm exams and final exams
  • Helps supervise students as directed (e.g., arrivals/departures, parking lots, lunch periods, hall duty, extracurricular programs, etc.).
  • Performs other specific job-related duties as directed by the Division Directors, CAO, and Head of School or others.
Qualifications:
  • Our ideal candidate is passionate about working with students, has a counseling mindset, and is committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a school counseling or dean of students role.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of social-emotional learning and positive behavior support strategies.
  • Ability to manage student discipline issues in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population and families.
  • Strong problem-solving and crisis management skills.
  • Ability to work with all levels of constituencies (students, parents, administrators, faculty and staff).
