Healthy Families Supervisor
The Supervisor’s primary role is to provide ongoing, intensive, professional supervision to the direct service staff. This may include either or both components of service, family support or family assessment. The supervision should be directed not only toward assuring quality of service provision, but also toward protecting the integrity and respect of the families served. As a result, the Supervisor should have weekly supervision time for each staff member, with at least two hours allotted for each session. Guided by the Critical Elements, this time should be directed at assisting the staff to support the families in developing realistic and effective support plans that will develop their capacity to become empowered to meet the families’ objectives/goals; to understand why a family may not be making the expected progress and determine effective methods of intervention; and to allow the staff to express their concerns/frustration in working with overburdened communities and families to avoid burnout.
The Supervisor also assists in the selection of staff, participates in the orientation and in-service training, conducts record reviews, assists in or maintains the data collection system, implements a quality assurance plan, directs and provides case management and monitors the performance of the Family Support Specialist/Family Resource Specialist. To support their competency, the Supervisor must be knowledgeable of and have maintained expertise in providing home-based services as well as be trained in and have experience in completing the assessment procedures utilized to determine families to be served by the program.
The Supervisor may also act as a liaison with other agencies and monitor contracts as well as the ongoing program development. The Supervisor usually functions as the team leader, conducting team meetings and providing daily support and crisis management.
Essential Functions
  • Provides supervision that is scheduled and protected for 1 ½ to 2 hours weekly that focuses on administrative, clinical and reflective components.
  • Supervisors are responsible for assigning referrals/cases, developing team minutes and taking minutes as designated on a rotating basis.
  • Responsible for assuring that staff have material and training needed to complete all aspects of their work.
  • Assures that staff perform monitoring and linkage via referrals to services for all families.
  • Assures that all contract requirements are being met including coaching on the Healthy Families America standards
  • Performs quality assurance which includes, shadowing, file review and client contact.
  • Attends meetings as assigned, follows up on tasks as necessary, and reports on actions.
  • Monitors staff performance with mid-month, end of month and quarterly reports; and with 3-month initial evaluation and then annually.
  • Reviews Assessment/Home Visit documentation and secondary activity documentation weekly.
  • Monitors timelines for referrals for service/initiation of service
  • Participates in the selection of staff in coordination with the Program Manager.
  • Directs and provides case management and case review to assure family needs are being met.
  • Verifies service for billing.
  • Communicates with Program Manager of Unusual Occurrences or Incidents
  • Provides on call service for Healthy Families on a weekly basis and on call services to the agency on a bi-annual basis.
  • Support staff in working with parents to improve deficit areas.
  • Adheres to the agency’s Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity Plan.
  • Receives ongoing training to support professional development based off HFA, HFI, and SCAN policies and standards
  • Remain up to date on required trainings
  • Cover visits, assessments, and serve families when staffing is low or staff are out.
  • Provide additional support to Family Resource Supervisor as needed to read assessments on non-work- days/vacations
  • Become familiar with the Policy and Procedure manual for Healthy Families Allen County and Healthy Families Indiana
  • Meet weekly and monthly deadlines put in place
  • Supervisors are held accountable to the following outcomes:
    • Team meets 100% of billables
    • Quarterly team report for due/done per database is 75% or higher
    • Team reaches/maintains 80% of all tools due
  • Participate in fundraising activities. The number of fundraising hours is determined yearly and includes but is not limited to a specific number of ducks to be sold during Annual Duck Race Season.
  • Participate in agency on call and evening floor rotations.
  • Occasional evening and/or weekend work.
  • Involves frequent contact with staff and the public.
  • Work may be stressful at times.
  • Contact may involve dealing with individuals who are angry/upset/distressed.

Physical Demands
  • Requires ability to record, prepare, and effectively communicate information in various reports.

  • Requires prolonged sitting, and some bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Requires ability to work under stressful conditions and to deal with irate individuals.
  • While in client homes, must be able to:
    • Climb and maneuver steps in narrow hallways and in small rooms.
    • Tolerate strong smells.
    • Read printed material in poorly lighted areas.
    • Must use senses of sight, hearing, and smell to evaluate the safety of an environment for children.
    • Must be able to respond rapidly to a child in danger.
    • May be subjected to infectious diseases, substances and contaminated articles physically out of the control of the children supervised.
Expected Hours of Work
  • Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available between the "core" work hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and must work 40 hours each week to maintain full-time status.
Required Education
  • Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of relevant experience
  • Previous experience with family/participant services in a home-based environment
  • Experience in providing services and support to culturally diverse communities/families
  • Experience in home visiting with a strong background in prevention services to the 0-3 age population
  • A solid understanding of or experience in supervising and motivating staff, as well as providing support to staff in stressful work environments
  • Knowledge of infant and child development and parent-child attachment
  • Experience with family services which embrace the concepts of family-centered and strength-based service provision
  • Knowledge of parent-infant health and dynamics of child abuse and neglect
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in human services or fields related to working with children and families
  • Infant mental health endorsement preferred
  • Experience with reflective practice preferred
