The Job

The Legal Intern assists the SCAN Legal Department on key legal issues and works on a variety of areas supported by the Department, including contracts, regulatory, litigation, privacy, legal operations, and special projects. The Legal Department partners with SCAN's business leaders to foster legal and ethical behaviors in support of SCAN’s mission of keeping seniors healthy and independent.

The successful candidate will have outstanding communication, legal research and writing skills, be detail oriented, be an enthusiastic learner, and can work autonomously on a variety of assignments and projects. The Legal Intern should possess a strong drive for excellence, attention to detail, an ability to adapt to change, and a “can do” positive attitude. 

This internship is an opportunity at SCAN’s headquarters in Long Beach, California starting in late May through mid-August 2024. The position is hybrid with two on-site days per week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays).

You Will

Work under the supervision of Legal Department attorneys while developing practical, hands on legal and business experience in an in-house setting.

Provide support with reviewing, editing, drafting, and proofreading of legal documents, such as contracts, briefs, memoranda, and correspondence.

Perform legal and factual research to provide well-informed and expert legal advice and guidance related to matters including contracts, regulatory, compliance, and litigation. 

Assist in the development or improvement of templates, training materials, department-wide business processes, and policies and procedures.

Exercise independent problem-solving techniques; proactively follow up on pending matters; work well as a team player with key business units through transparent and frequent communication.

Maintain privacy and confidentiality of all matters.

Work collaboratively within the Legal Department and with other departments within the organization.

Actively support the achievement of SCAN’s Vision and Goals.

Other duties as assigned or required.

Your Qualifications

Must have Bachelor’s degree. 

Must be a rising 2L or 3L at an ABA-accredited law school.

Applicant’s academic, extracurricular, and/or community accomplishments clearly demonstrate a long-standing and compelling interest in pursuing a career in health law.

Excellent writing, editing, research, and analytical skills required.

Some health law classes (i.e., health law survey course, administrative law, or other health law-related course/seminar) or experience in health law preferred.

Ability to problem-solve, use judgment and discretion.

Proactive and flexible, with the ability to work in an environment with shifting priorities and demands.

Strong organization skills; detail oriented and ability to work with precision.

Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor

Ability to handle multiple tasks in a high-paced environment simultaneously and balance priorities and timelines.

Ability to receive and complete assignments with minimal supervision.

Ability to handle and manage confidential information.

Strong knowledge of MS Office.
