Description

Department: Child Well Being and Family Wellness

Program: San Diego Emergency Shelter

Status: Regular, part-time (10 hours per week) 

Pay: $21.87 per hour

Schedule: May include some evenings up to 7:30 p.m.

SBCS Corporation operates a 24/7 year-round confidential, emergency shelter program for victims of domestic violence and their children. Services include 24-hour emergency shelter, food, transportation, 24-hour crisis hotline, psychological support and peer counseling, referrals to community resources, and community education and outreach.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Childcare Provider shall be responsible for providing services and support for women who have experienced domestic violence and their children. Services will be consistent with the agency’s goals, objectives, mission and style. 

DUTIES:

  • Provide nurturing, compassionate, developmentally appropriate, and supportive care to children.
  • Care for and actively supervise children during childcare hours.
  • Be aware of children(s) special circumstances (e.g., health concerns, peak stress time, emotional difficulties…etc.)
  • Maintain contact with the children’s parents and contact them in the case of an emergency.
  • Plan and facilitate educational age-appropriate activities for children (infants, toddlers, pre-school age and school age children)
  • Communicate with parents about the behavior of their children.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the childcare room.
  • As a mandated reporter, should be able to report any suspicion of child abuse or neglect to the relevant authorities as required by law.
  • Ensure that sign-in sheets are correctly maintained and submitted to the Program Coordinator in a timely fashion.
  • Attend and actively participate in Team meetings and trainings as required.
  • Ability to communicate critical incidents to supervisor. 
  • As other duties assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED and 1 year of experience in a similar position. 
  • Experience working with children in a daycare or other childcare related setting. 
  • Knowledge of child development. 
  • Knowledge of domestic violence is preferred.
  • Bilingual — English and Spanish required. 
  • Must be able to read and write English. 
  • Ability to work with a diverse population, possess cultural sensitivity, and maintain appropriate boundaries with clients. 
  • CPR/First Aid certification required within 30 days of hire.

Condition of Employment

  • Employment may be conditioned upon satisfactory completion of certain background clearances which may include a Department of Justice criminal background check requiring my fingerprints (Live Scan), screening through the National Sex Offender Public Website, drug test, tuberculosis (TB) test, and such additional clearances as may be required under the program. 
  • Candidates/employees who have received a conditional offer of employment will be required to undergo testing for controlled substances, in accordance with the County of San Diego's drug and alcohol policy and the federal Controlled Substances Act.

Physical Demands:

  • Mentally and emotionally: Ability to work under deadlines, various projects and dealing with clients in crisis and difficult situations.
  • Stand: Prolonged periods of standing and bending.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot from floor to floor.
  • Bending: Must be able to bend, stoop, crouch, and sit on the floor to engage with children.
  • Lifting: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Carrying: Transporting an object, usually holding it in the hands or arms, or on the shoulder Ability to carry children (up to 35 pounds) and move furniture in an early childhood classroom.
  • Pushing: Exerting force upon an object so that the object moves away from the force.
  • Pulling: Exerting force upon an object so that the object moves toward the force (includes jerking)
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending stairs, using feet and legs or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching.
  • Stooping: Prolonged bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands. Fingers are involved only to the extent that they are an extension of the hand.
  • Finger Movement: Picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Talking is important for those activities in which workers must impart oral information to clients or to the public, and in those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
