Overview

Cytotechnologist - Stony Brook Pathologists, UFPC

Location: Stony Brook, NY

Schedule: Full time

Days/Hours: Day Shift

Pay: $43.25 - $59.39

Responsibilities

SUMMARY: A Cytotechnologist is a valuable member of our team, who provides clinical services to our patient population, and will also Interact in a professional manner with physicians, nursing staff, support staff, peers and other members of the hospital community. Will maintain a general knowledge of safe practices and conducts oneself in a manner consistent with those practices to insure the safety of all Laboratory personnel.

Using a microscope, a cytotechnologist will examine Gynecologic (GYN), Non-Gynecologic (Non-GYN) cytology specimens to determine if the cellular changes are benign, neoplastic, or malignant. The microscopic findings are presented to the Pathologist and a final diagnosis is rendered. This information will permit therapeutic decisions and follow-up monitoring of the patient.

Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

Job Duties & Essential Functions:

  • Screen Cytology specimens (Gynecologic and Non-Gynecologic to determine whether the cellular changes meet guidelines to necessitate referral to the Pathologist.
  • Prepare written cytologic reports utilizing standard terminology specific to organ systems, documentation of immediate assessments, communications to clinicians, and reference all related specimens on final report.
  • Apply appropriate billing codes for each case.
  • Process specimens for microscopic evaluation when needed (i.e. registration, ordering, accessioning and cytopreparation) according to established policies & procedures.
  • Participate in Quality Control and Quality Assurance.
  • Participate in Proficiency Testing and Continuing Education.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

Required Education and Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate Degree with formal training from an accredited school of Cytotechnology.
  • NYS licensure as a Cytotechnologist or documented eligibility.
  • Candidate must have passed the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) registry exam (CT, ASCP) and must be a registered Cytotechnologist with NYSED and have a NYSED license in Cytotechnology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Specialist in Cytotechnology certification, SCT (ASCP).
  • 5 years relevant experience.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with patients, staff and medical providers. The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. This position is active and requires the employee to constantly move about in the office to assist patients, staff and medical providers. Any additional physical demands will be outlined and provided by management.
