Overview

Comptroller, StaffCo of Brooklyn LLC

Location: Remote

Schedule: Full time ( May include some work on site as deemed necessary)

Days/Hours: Mon-Fri - 8:30am to 5:00pm 

Pay: $150,000 to $200,000

Responsibilities

SUMMARY: The StaffCo of Brooklyn Comptroller is responsible to manage the financial operations for StaffCo of Brooklyn, Professional Employer Organization (PEO), serving multiple locations of Stony Brook University Hospital.

Job Duties & Essential Functions:

  • Review and approve accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, benefit payments, journal entries, bank reconciliations, investments, banking and other daily functions using the Lawson accounting system, Kronos payroll, and ADP for tax
  • Coordinate with independent CPA’s for fiscal and calendar year end audit’s including financial statement preparation and pension
  • Prepare and submit the annual PEO Filing renewal to the NYS Department of Labor
  • Work with insurance broker on annual insurance program and coverage including Liability, Crime, Workers Compensation, Directors & Officers, Cyber
  • Coordinate with the CPA for the quarterly Agreed Upon Procedures filing with the NYS Dept of Labor
  • Coordinate implementation of new accounting and payroll systems, as needed
  • Serving as member of the Employee Benefits Committee (EBC)
  • Review pension plan changes
  • Interact with the Executive Director on relevant issues including meeting deliverables deadlines and coordinating Finance and EBC meetings
  • Maintain relationships with bankers, investment managers and third-party administrators
  • Prepare/Approve Requests for Proposals as needed. Participate in vendor selection process.
  • Calculate Annual Fringe Benefit Percentages for application budgeting and accounts receivable purposes.
  • Year-end preparation of 1099’s for the combined StaffCo locations
  • Conduct financial audits to assure compliance with applicable laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Advises executive management of company’s finances. 

Other:

  • Coordinate financial and payroll software implementation initiatives
  • Manage financial policies and procedures to ensure scope is current and comprehensive. Identify areas of risk and propose policy updates.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 10 or more years in a progressively responsible accountant role, including at least 5 years in a managerial or leadership role.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and accounting software skills (Lawson, Kronos Payroll and ADP Payroll and Benefits).
  • Prior experience with financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting and dashboard development.
  • Prior experience merging multiple data sources and validating data.
  • Excellent interpersonal and project management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA or Masters in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA certification
  • Accounting experience in a Professional Employer Organization with responsibilities for finance, payroll, auditing, and employee medical and pension benefit plans

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with StaffCo site Chief Financial Officers and HR leadership. The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. This position is largely sedentary and requires the employee to remain stationary for a majority of the day. Any additional physical demands will be outlined and provided by management.

StaffCo is a Professional Employer Organization, commonly referred to as a PEO, duly organized and registered under the New York Professional Employer Organization law. StaffCo and SUNY have entered into a professional employer agreement under which StaffCo is the employer of Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Stony Brook Eastern, Long Island Hospital, Stony Brook Clinical Practice Management Plan employees and responsible for all aspects of employment, including hiring, promotions, disciplines, terminations, the day-to-day direction and supervision of work, as well as labor relations and collective bargaining. StaffCo is fully responsible for providing all payroll and human resources services, including the payment of wages, collecting and reporting payroll taxes and maintaining any and all employee benefits. SUNY Stony Brook Hospital is responsible for the operation of the hospital and provision of health care and is the co-employer as is necessary to conduct its responsibilities and for related licensure, regulatory or statutory requirements and obligations.

Given StaffCo’s employment responsibilities, it is deemed the “employer” for employment and labor law purposes. Thus, the employees are private sector employees of StaffCo, not public sector employees of SUNY. The private sector nature of the StaffCo employees has been approved by NYS Civil Service and upheld in a decision by the US National Labor Relations Board.
